Hi Aine,
Have you thought about simply transferring the wood texture to a metal intaglio plate?
There are several ways to do this (my fav is acetone transferring a photocopy) and it would
save the frustration of trying to wipe a wood 'plate'.
Cheers,
Lee

Sue, beautiful engraving. Reading Maria's reply about how to treat
wood for intaglio printing gave me food for thought. Yes, even
dingbats who stay in this humidity when we could be in pleasant
weather think. (my brain is fuzzy from sleep deprivation due to hot
nights) I am working on this piece of maple and love it. She said
something about maple being good for engraving. Geez never thought of
that one. Maybe I need to explore this. End grain maple is that the
best for starting??

Oh, loved the idea of doing a woodblock in two colors one wiped and
one rolled. Now I need a journal to write down future projects.

Funny thing about my sketch books, they are often full of really ugly
doodles and idea drawings and than aha a nice finished drawing. I
once had an artist friend at the coast insist on looking at one of my
sketch books, this one was an idea book and I said you will be
disappointed as there is nothing you will want to see. I can't tell
you the times I have referred to that book for something new to do next.

If you like wood type, letterpress or just old fashion nostalgia about the
old days of printmaking there is a fantastic documentary online about the
Hamilton Museum of Wood Type in Two Rivers Wisconsin. Great stuff,
machinery in action, interviews with old staff from the days when wood
type was still being made, 63 minutes......Not to be missed !!!!

I think it is also available on DVD from Kartemquin.

If you ever wanted to own a classic Vandercook press from the days of
letterpress but did not have the space or budget to bring one of these
babies home....fear no more !

You too can have a Vandercook press in your studio:

That's pretty nifty, Julio. I am going to print that out and it will
take the place of my real one. Funny, the timing on your post and my
showing the Vandercook Press to the book arts professor from Hiram
College today. He is looking for a Vandercook for his classes, and
it's going to be the one I have that he gets.

O.K., my 18 year old daughter convinced me to post my sample artwork on
DeviantArt. It is free and has a nice interface for viewing thumbnails and
close-ups of the art. I'm not sure if it is appropriate or not, but
supposedly she has never received any viruses or other bad things from the
web site, so I decided to give it a try.

Here is a link to my work:

http://kimroddy.deviantart.com/gallery/

The prints were uploaded first and are at the bottom of the gallery page.
The other drawings and paintings are just to let you all know my experience
level and the kind of work I've done (which isn't that much). I haven't
filled in any of the text on the side yet, but I guess I could add my artist
statement and current projects there. More to follow when I get a chance...

By the way, I know about the print exchanges on [Baren], but I also heard
from another member that artists can participate in some kind of a swap
program as well, submitting a certain number of editions of a single print
and after awhile, you get the same number of different prints from different
artists who participate. Can someone point me in the right direction to find
out more information on this?

Thanks,

That was the Swap Shop, but it is no longer in operation:

Subject: Ukiyoe-Printing using a Vandercook Press
Posted by: Julio

Printmaker Mark Herschede:

"A brief runthrough of the process I'm using right now to make a bank of images using woodcuts. By using tools which are not normally associated with one another, I've been working towards experimenting with mixing processes. Currently I'm researching the technical aspects of printing water based, japanese style woodblock printing on a vandercook through testing and manipulation of the materials involved."
"It is my hope to be scoffed at by Japanese moku-hanga printers and letterpress typesetting nerds alike. Please! Feel free to insult my experiments! (Or offer constructive criticism ;-) )! Get angry at my usage of a type proving press to print 'cuts'; become enraged at my seemingly smashing attempts at printing lovingly hand-inked blocks!"
