I have gotten some beautiful wood grain from shina.  I go thru them all and pick out the ones with good grain and save them.  But I also use other wood, too.
Transparent watercolor is important.  You said you are using opaque watercolor and that may block the grain.

I have finished exchange #50!!  For reasons only God and women in their 50's will understand, I woke up at 4:37 yesterday morning and couldn't get back to sleep.  Finally got up and had them finished by 8am.  They will go out today.

This is a good suggestion Eli.
I have never been able to get rid of the texture the brushing leaves.
Although in some cases it can give an interesting effect.
The 120 sandpaper is my choice.

Such is a familar tale. The word "print" is one of the misused words. You
know all the variations - it's used for "a pattern", " a reproduction", "a
photograph", " etc. The one that I love is when I sell at an "art fair' -
and a potential client is pawing over a Gustave Bauman woodcut and I explain
the process - they say "thank you" and walk off, hearing one of them saying,
"It's only a print".

Unfortunately, it's going to take a long time to get that message through -
that original prints - those where the matrix is created by the artist -
has the same status as paintings, drawings, watercolors, etc. It is up to
the artist, the publisher and the art dealer to champion this concept - this
blog being one of those venues. We all need to carry that word. In my,
instance mentioned above, I needed to do a better job to convert and not let
my frustration get in the way. The understanding of what constitutes an
original print starts with each of us doing our part to educate. Good luck -
you have empathizers.

Butternut is my personal favourite for beautiful wood grain (and good
carve-ability).

You also want to do the final brush strokes lightly against the grain.
Along with a better ratio of nori (rice paste) this drag will highlight the
variations in grain.

forgot to say
it is the BLACK & WHITE
that makes it quicker- of course.
simplify
and that sounds like a smart move
to IMPLANT the color in the wood so that it comes out with each printing

here is an example of the use of FIR plywood grain
i get the darker and lighter effects by rubbing one section with the baren only
and one section with a silver spoon, after the baren

http://rst-art.com/GG-eag1.htm

i leave the plywood outside til the grain is very discernable
and one CAN achieve detail
carve big

Indeed, what a relief! (is that a pun?) I just finished printing all my 100 tiny prints yesterday, Monday. I’ll be sorting thru them, and signing them today or tomorrow. They should be in the post by tomorrow, unless something goes horribly wrong. (knock on wood)

What a great time this has been. I loved working in the small format. And, I have learned such a great deal, too.

I’m very excited about getting my little package back in the mail.

I also finally finished my prints. One more day to let the ink dry and they will be on their way! I can't wait to see everyone's work!

Yay! I'm done too. Just got mine all signed and now they're winging their way to Gayle. Fly true, little dragonflies!

This was a lot of fun. I've never printed so many of anything before and it was quite challenging. I'm eager to do the next exchange -- it'll be a breeze! ;-j

Looking forward to seeing everyone's work!

LOL...  my cranes are done but I'm leaving them on my lightbox for another couple of days so they will be a bit dryer (it's been raining somewhat here).  And I'm going to be very, very careful not to do a 'Bea' when I mail them (which I have done twice on previous exchanges, so you are not alone, Bea).

Signing all these cards is a pain in the...wrist.  ;- ]  Over half way there, then stuff them in a mailer and send them winging on their way.

Fly little dragonflies!  They're on their way!  =8-D

Such a relief.  I feel like I can turn around and jump right into a new block, but I know that's just the high that comes from a finished project.  But shortly I'll have to dive into the xmas card block.  No rest for the over-extended.

Subject: Warbler linocut finished!
Posted by: Sherrie Y

I'm pleased to report that I'm already meeting one of the goals of the move to Studio V! Separating art-making from business and illustration/design work is turning out to be the great thing I hoped it would be. This morning I went straight to the studio and spent most of the day there, stopping only for a short lunch break with the DM. The result of uninterrupted time?  Three (and a half) color passes and completion of a new linocut. YAY!

Of course, I'm still tripping over myself with little details like remembering to take photos. And despite new lamps I'm still not happy with the lighting situation in the space, but, hey! I'm getting stuff done anyway.

Rather than send you back to see where this piece was last week, here's a quick image reprise:

First four passes: Yellow, blue, transparent gray (stenciled),
and a green that was supposed to be a blend but didn't
work out exactly as I planned.

Before we left for the Front Range last week I had printed the
fifth pass. This was a transparent salmon-y color and I
quite liked the resulting warmth that came to the greens.
