Dear Baren Forum People,

Once again, thank you for answering a question I posted about getting even printing with faint colo(u)rs. I tried the suggestions I got from Graham Scholes and Dave Bull, and will heed Eli's caution. Both the suggestions of using a thin nori paste and adding gum arabic were successful.

I really appreciate the help getting started to make a good print.

Thanks, Larry

hello Bareners!

i just posted a couple of new prints out there in the interwebs and thought i would share with you. the art show poster is my first attempt at using MDF as a block. all of my previous experience was with mounted and unmounted linoleum and i have to say i prefer the MDF, both for the clarity of line and also the lack of size limitation. the price is also much more reasonable than lino. the other project is a holiday card that i'm using for personal cards and peddling at craft fairs. enjoy!

also, a technical question.... i have been carving with my art store purchased NIJI knives. they came with a honing stone, but i can't seem to replenish the sharp, square edge on my 'V' knife. does anyone have any advice on this? am i not trying hard enough, or am i barking up the wrong cheap art supply tree?

the excitement from the newest exchange is contagious, i can't wait to clear my plate and sign up for one of these!!!!

are there any Bareners on (or near) the central coast of California?

happy wintertimes!

Glenn,
the V is the hardest knife to sharpen...no question about it
Hold your elbow into your side so your arm is very steady...
here is one set of instructions

and another

and another

and maybe here

You just have to figure it out, but these should help. The tools you have need to be honed on leather with honing compound every few cuts to stay sharp

I think one of the reasons ATC people like the baseball card holders
is that the cards can be taken out. I know that in photos of ATC
exhibits I've seen, the very CARD holders are hung on the wall with
the cards still inside! I've been planning on doing some kind of
interchangeable frame for a tabletop view because I've acquired (now
ESPECIALLY!) so many. Some of mine are folded or three dimensional as
there's no rules about that so I'm thinking some sort of frame without
glass. Perhaps you might group them for framing? I've seen that done
as well. The final size is the important thing. I've made a couple
that are three dimensional or actual little books. Here's a link to
some of mine --> http://tinyurl.com/6mdmv5d

Which brings me to the question for all you experienced printmakers. I
heard 'somewhere' that it is a tradition for the Japanese NOT to frame
their prints, that they are kept in special drawers or cabinets, and
then a particular one ... to honor a guest, a special occasion or a
holiday ... is taken out and displayed on a special 'holder'? Could
someone elucidate? I'm curious not only about the tradition, but the
actual way the print is displayed. Especially since there are such
specific sizes in the genre. Is there a special holder that one can
purchase? Where would one do that?

Thank you.

Carole,
This goes way back and prints were always kept in albums, like photo albums, in Europe as well as Japan. They were never hung on the wall until the last 100 years or so....Framers probably started it to make money....
I think you can buy archival albums lots of places, Talas, Lightimpressions, University products and probably many more...even Blick has some stuff. Any photography store probably has things as well.

I can see it now, friends come over and the TV is missing, we take out the print albums and spend an hour or two looking at art! I like this scenario.

Cards ordered thru Vista Print.  *whew*

What a project.  One complication after another, but it's done now.

I'm calling it Denizens until something better occurs to me.  I can't give in to my other title:  Not a Creature Was Stirring.  That'd be the 3rd xmas print titled that.  ;->  I really am a creature of habit.
