Hi Larry,

Do you know the work of Matt Brown? He does beautiful moku hanga New England landscapes and he achieves a high level of depth and detail using woodblock. Here's his web site:
http://www.ooloopress.com/

Matt teaches here in New England and I highly recommend him as an instructor. I know he could help you with your color separation questions. He lists several workshops on his site for 2012.

best,

Annie

Oh, my... Diane... I am blushing... thank you for high praise of my
color work. (It's a tiny bit ironic this week, since I've started a
really complex piece that so far looks headed for the "collage-making-
scrap bin" .)

I'd like to add Ian Phillips of Wales in the list of printmakers who
translate complex landscapes into beautiful color prints... he's one
of MY heros. http://www.reliefprint.co.uk/

To all the Stateside Bareners... Happy Thanksgiving! The Barenforum
is, of course, on my "thankfulness" list.

Cheers!

I work with lino on large prints and, having found that out, one guy
sneered " Oh, lino; I did lino in grade seven". That was my cue to give him
a big smile and ask if he ever got $600 for one of his linos. I can be a
jerk too:-)

Other than that I don't remember anyone very annoying at a show except for
the occasional self-centered exhibitor who parks his/her vehicle so that
other other exhibitors can't get past to set up or tear down. I find that
people either like what I do and take time to look, or don't and go on to
the next artist. The comments I get are almost always positive.

Barbara's answer "a week or two and 56 years..." to 'how long did that
take..' is perfect. Most people that ask are genuinely curious and it's
good to let them know it took time to develop your skills. Of course, I'll
probably lie about the 56 years.

I have an 'annoying' story. Years back I did a lot of blind embossings and had some success at selling them. One woman bought a fairly large abstract fish and, as she walked away, said 'this is going to be such a fun project. I'm going to fill in the raised areas with watercolor." I wanted to rip the print out of her hands but restrained myself. Some people just don't 'get' blind emboss...

Subject: [Baren 44636] Methylcellulose for chine colle - what consistency ?
Send Message: To this poster

Hello Bareners

After it being in residence for about 3 years - I have finally gotten the
jar of 100 grammes of methylcellulose
Powder, out of the cupboard and read the label on the front

It says

Mix 5 grams of MC, with 50 milli litres of hot water (max 90 degrees
centigrade)

Then slowly add another 50 ml of cold water.

I have done this although I did not add the full amount of cold water
as it seemed to be getting too thin.

I plan to use it for chine colle and am used to using, ready made Nori
(rice paste)

I wondered if anyone knows if its normal consistency is thinner than e.g.
rice paste.

Also does it keep for a few months/years ?
Do you need to keep it in the fridge and so on.?

Thank you

I am sure you will get 25 replies.... anyway here's the goods....

Mix the 5grams of MC into a thin paste. I just toss an teaspoon full in the cup.
Pour BOILING water (100 Celsius) into the mix. It turns thick and translucent.
Just keep slowly pouring the hot water till you have a THIN paste. Never mind the cold water.
The mix will soon cool and turn thick. If too thick ... add cold water anytime if thinning is needed.

By the way, if this paste does not thicken up (smooth translucent quality), stick it in a microwave and zap it.
Watch it closely and you will see it getting translucent.... Voila .... Bobs your Uncle you got paste the way it has to be.

It will go mouldy in a week or so, at room temperature
It will last about a month in the fridge.

You don't need to buy the MC powder. Using household Corn Starch works just the same.
I found it hard to find a household wheat flour that worked.....
I did buy some Chinese Wheat flour from a store in Chinatown that worked perfect.

If you are going to chin colle and you do not want the buckling to happen,
which is caused by one paper shrinking more or in a different direction than the other,
don't use rice paste. There is an neutral acid free product available.... I will
have to go to my studio to find the name.... I will have to check through the
receipts file to find the source.

Until later.

It's not exactly on topic, but it sure is interesting way to play with drawing skills...

Coming along now, the worst bit is gouging the larger areas of white. The best bit is 'discovering' nice textures and ways to depict areas like sky and water. I'm enjoying this immensely. :-)
