Here is a letter I sent to Gayle who is co-ordinating our #50 Exchange
this week which members should be made aware of ................
>
>> Dear Gayle,
>>
>> Beware!
>> After sending my return postage to you by Paypal our bank has advised
>> us that we have had some unlicited transactions on this account and
>> we have now been advised to cancel this credit card. The withdrawal
>> has nothing to do with our transaction or you of course but the
>> withdrawal was listed as "Yahoo" and a different amount entirely. I
>> think it advisable that maybe others using this avenue should check
>> their back statements or with their bank to see if the same has
>> affected them.
>> This is not our day to day credit card. This has happened within
>> two weeks of my sending this across to the USA.
I have explained it in another way which may be clearer:
In addition to the amount I sent directly to your yahoo account which
went through satisfactorily, an additional amount was withdrawn from
that same account by "Yahoo" which was not authorised. Our bank
informed us of this transaction and advised us to cancel that credit
card because once they have our account number and details it is easy
to withdraw further amounts without us realising until the bank
statement comes at the end of the month. Luckily it was not a large
amount whereas our neighbour lost $7,000AUS through Bpay just recently.
I thought it may be worth warning others who have sent money to your
"yahoo" address in case it has also affected others.
I hope this has not happened to anyone else in this Exchange.
Cheers,
Jan

Hello Bareners,
Jan Telfer just sent me an email regarding something that happened via Paypal. Her bank informed her that an unauthorized amount was put on her credit card, and if I understand this correctly -- it was using the Yahoo paypal address that I have had people use to send their return postage for Exchange #50, so please check your statements regarding any extra funds going out to that email address. Jan's bank found the unauthorized payment and advised her to close that credit card. I hope this does not happen to any of you, and I apologize profusely if it has. I had no idea. I never have used Paypal except once or twice to buy something, so having people pay this way was a new experience. I didn't know a yahoo address (which I always have used for any business transactions) could be unreliable. I am so sorry, Jan and anyone else this may have happened to.

This may have nothing to do with PayPal or with Yahoo or with Gayle's
address or with the Baren transaction, although I can see how it can be easy
to connect it that way.
Obviously some unsavory character was able to obtain Jan's credit card
number and I am so sorry that happened.
We were victims of identity theft a long time ago and it is a huge pain and
work to try to rectify records.
At that time we went through the same exercise when trying to figure out how
on earth this could have happened and we canceled things that shouldn't have
been canceled. We closed out accounts, we changed passwords... Ended up that
our own bank was at fault for giving a fraudster (who just called them on
the phone) an additional Visa card with pin number mailed out to an address
not of our own. The bank is lucky we didn't sue them.
Took us about two years to clean up the last of the Jamaica, NY address from
our credit records and put a lock on them the size of the statue of liberty.
On the upside we became very good friends with one of our local FBI agents
who ended up buying some art from me :-)

All's well that ends well. 8-] But a good cautionary tale.
