Elizabeth Atwood wrote "Interesting is the Paul Revere illustrations. BUT I wonder what a "woodcut in lead" means."

Jose Posada engraved some of his print onto type metal 'Lead and zinc' blocks this could be what is meant.

Jose Posada etched the zinc plates and printed them in relief. I am
guessing the lead was engraved but i don't know.

You can make relief plates using solarplate or similar photo polymer plates, but it would not be individual letters but entire paragraphs, you print the text on clear film or mylar and expose it to the plates in the sun under the weight of plate glass and wash it out with water. Do not use window glass as it has a UV inhibitor in it and the UV light from the sun develops the plates.

Hi, Olek,

You perhaps need to search under 'rubber stamp alphabet'.
http://www.paper-source.com/cgi-bin/paper/kits/alphabet-stamps.html

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=rubber+stamp+alphabet&_sacat=See-All-Categories

Sister Mary Corita produced wonderful work in the sixties and
seventies, sometimes using rubber stamp alphabets for the
lettering. I'm very fond of her work, and especially her 'Hints
and Rules for Students and Teachers', which I first saw in
rubber stamp format.

Wood type is very expensive. Few places are producing it now,
but Hamilton Wood Type Museum is making a font or two. (Visit
the Museum if you ever have a chance!)
http://woodtype.org/
or shop on ebay....'letterpress wood type'.

Best wishes,
Sharen

Jerelee, as the greedy one who originally posted wanting all 100 prints, I apologize. A lot of us know what you are going thru right now. But remember, even if we don't want to admit it, these are just pieces of paper without real value except what we put on them. Family and friends, life and love are much more important. Do the prints if you can but don't stress over it. Thank you Barbara and Maria for stepping in like that. I will enclose a stamped self addressed envelope with mine.

I have had my blocks for the tiny print done for quite a while but not the block of time needed to get them done. They will be finished tomorrow and mailed on Tuesday. 4 blocks, 7 impressions (so 700-ish impressions), moku hanga. My baren is too big so I have been using a stone that fits my hand just right.

Seems like there was something else I wanted to comment about but I forget what it was now......

Because endgrain boxwood, the wood of choice for engravers, was not always
available or cost effective, many engravers used 'lead' for their plate. It
was the metal they cast type from, an alloy of lead, antimony and tin. It
handled somewhat the same as the wood using wood engraving tools and, when
the printing was done, could be melted down and recast as a blank plate. It
would have been quite ideal for the publishing industry, especially
newspapers, because of this.

ha ha! guys that is hilarious stuff, especially that Crayola electric
printing press
actually Im searching through things like this.
http://www.marketeo.pl/photoOffer/p/109198_p.jpg
don't know how you spell it in english, but i think it's possible to
purchase that sort of types in reasonable price here.

Babara, I've never had an acasion with solarplates. sounds fun, especially
if it is relief printing.
I could also prepare some offset plates and print them on press, but im
afraid it won't mix good with blockprinting.

here are samples of polish political prints from '80s
http://www.solidarnosc.starachowice.pl/dodatki/009.jpg
http://www.solidarnosc.starachowice.pl/dodatki/mini_010.jpg
it was forbidden to print anything in that times, except official
propaganda.

and tool that they was using to print'em

On Friday I packaged my 101 tiny prints in a new box and attached an address label and stamps for a Priority mailing. Enclosed a check and another label for the return and a thankyou note. I went to the post office to see if I had enough stamps on to cover the cost of the mailing. I was missing 15 cents so added that and happily reported that I mailed my #50 prints.
On Saturday someone brought up my mail and there in the middle of the stack of mail was my new box with the right number of stamps attached. "Didn't I just mail this?"
When I looked closely I saw that I had the return label that was supposed to be for Gayle to use, placed on the box. TO: Bea Gold FROM: Gayle Wolken! Cost me $5.10 to send me the box. You'll get it eventually Gayle. Bea Gold

Bea,
I nearly fell off my chair laughing...this is so like me to do. I am much too busy for someone who cannot seem to remember what they are doing. Somehow it all gets done but not necessarily on time! hahaha
But I too am sending my prints out tomorrow...
Thanks for my best laugh this week!

There are still many places keeping letterpress alive producing lead
type. In the US there's NA Graphics in Colorado, Don Black line Casting
in Canada and Quaker Type. I know there is a place still producing type
and presses in India and I know there are many active letterpress people
in Europe. I have also picked up 2 sets of letter stamps off eBay that
are rather old. I would be very careful on eBay with buying type
though. Many people are breaking up perfectly good fonts of wood and
metal fonts to sell as collectibles. An single alphabet is not a
complete set so anyone selling such should be avoided. Also give a call
around to rubber stamp makers in your area. Most started using lead and
wood type for vulcanizing rubber stamps. If one is old enough they may
still have an old setup in storage or still in use ya never know. I
stumbled across one in Chicago several years ago and it was like walking
back into the 1920s.

Mark Phillips
