I was hoping I might be able to get some asisstance or at least pointed in
the right direction concerning a question I have about creating a print. I
would like to create a linocut print based on a bookplate created by Frank
Brangwyn in 1919. Are there any legal issues that would apply that I should
be aware of? From what I have been able to find it appears that if the work
was created before 1923 it is in the public domain but I would like to make
sure I do the right thing.

Thanks, Robert

There are indeed. Brangwyn died in 1956, and his work (his entire body
of work, no connection to when each piece was created) remains under
copyright protection until 'Death + 70' (UK law).

Note that the US rules are different, and it could be argued that the
piece you want to use is now in the public domain in _that_ country
(only).

Hi,

I am printing for the mini print. Sure hope this little plate holds up
for a hundred prints! I left my relief ink in Mexico and am using
etching ink. I find it slightly different to work with. Learning
something new, using thinner coats of ink with this to get it uniform.
So I lost a few at the start, but since the paper is sooo small it is
not much to loose. Glad to hear others are busy working on this project
as well. I don't care much for facebook, but get your messages. Some
times they don't make much sense, but oh well, guess one needs to be
there daily to follow the thread.

Hi,

For adding make ready under a block, what is the best kind of adhesive to
use to attach the make ready to the underside of a block? Also do you folks
use newsprint? Or interleaving for make-ready? Or does it matter?

Also I have read here on baren in addition to using brayers for rainbow
rolls for color blending, if doing a small area, rubber balls covered with
chamois is a good choice for both inking small areas and color blending
small or narrow areas. Are there any other methods? I was thinking of
brushing the ink on but do you find this leaves brush strokes on the print?
I'm working with etching inks on blocks by the way.

Thanks.

Just a note to everyone that participated in Ex47:

I'm working diligently with the images from Exchange 47. I should have the
gallery updated by the weekend or so-ish.

I have ideas circulating for a new engraving. I want to try and depict the speed and thrill of riding a wooden bellyboard in the surf. The sort of wave that you catch and which then carries you pell mell with walls of foam sizzling past your ears and dumps you onto dry sand! Here's a first scribble:

I might paint a watercolour of it too, as a part of the process. Watercolour by it's very nature can create unexpected and pleasing effects, something I might be able to translate into the wood block.

In the meantime, here are some more beach studies:

Here is the first block of what [I think] will be a 3-block print. It will actually be the second block in the order of printing, but I carved it first because it has the most information. I pulled a proof and then printed to Yupo to transfer to the other blocks. This is one of my largest blocks to date, at 12" x 16". Other than more time spent carving and inking, I think the biggest adjustment will be in handling the larger paper when placing it on the block to print.
