Maria and Barbara re: editioning for the tsunami print

i decided to do an edition of 40
since that's what i had from the 20 sheets of kitakata i got from mcclane's
that gives 31 to the project and leaves 9 for me to keep or sell
seems a good split , doesn't it ?

my print is cut and printed and hanging on the line drying as i type

i am going to send it out , Barbara
as soon as it is dry

because lately the mail from maine is extremely slow !!

i sent Sharon Linder in chicago
my exchange 48 on april 21st and it is not there yet !
i sent it priority mail in the recommended flat
and it has been 9 days !! and not there yet

so- i want my tsuami print to have a chance at being first
and thence be on the cover !?

at the snail's pace of mail leaving maine ,it may barely get there in time...

i love my print
it was exciting to carve
and print in black and white
it depicts a Sea Turtle
emerging from a wave
all set before a background of the Fukushima nuclear power plant

I thought some folks already talked about how they'd sell extra copies on sites like Etsy, etc. I intend to do this myself and give the money to the Red Cross for Japan. I was going to abide by whatever price the group set. But I don't see why we can't make a larger edition. I'm offering my prints to the cause, not the whole block. Or so I thought. I don't think this is unreasonable.

I hope you'll post a pic of your print somewhere.
Once again the tortoise (turtle) wins the race.
I have two of four blocks cut...

The final decision was made in large because the number of PAID participants was only 7, in spite of the things I did to try and boost attendance and extending the sign up deadline.

Hardships this year including losing a studio.

Hello all.I have seen a few conversations on the forum about the subject of editioning and I find myself in a situation where I'm not sure about how to go about it. Last night I had a print sell at an auction benefiting a local art organization for what I though was a crazy amount of money ($950) because three or four people got into a bidding war. After that and this morning I had a few of the early bidders contact or talk to me about buying one. The print hasn't been editioned, the one in the auction was marked A/P, and in fact I set the opening bid low at $125 because I was thinking "I can always make more." Also, the one at the auction was just a torn piece of the print (14" x 18" ish) because at the time I didn't have funds to frame the whole print (20" x 24"). Now the dilemma... what is the ethical way to go about editioning and selling more prints from this block, especially since I already have potentially 5 people who want one. I don't want to anger the person who won it at the auction if they see more around for a third or quarter of the price they paid. And to make it a little more confusing, I guess it could actually be considered a woodblock monoprint since the background is monotype with several impressions that vary on each of the 5 proofs I've made so far, as well as being in different color combinations. In retrospect I should have thought about this before hand, but I was in a hurry to get a piece of art in before the deadline to the organization and grabbed what would be easy to frame quickly. The person who bought it and those bidding obviously knew I could make more, so maybe I shouldn't even worry about it because they also knew they were making a charitable donation when bidding it up. I think time is of the essence, though, in selling a few of them, and I want to go about it in an ethical and professional manner. I could really use suggestions from some experienced printmakers. Thanks in advance for any help!Andrea Starkey

Andrea,
You have no control over what happens at an auction...I would sell the other 5
people the print at the regular price of, say, $300 unframed, as that would be
your regular price. The $125 was an auction price to encourage bidding for a
charity. The people who bought it can attribute the high price they paid to the
fun of an auction for a worthy cause and to lots of wine with dinner.
I have a friend who sold a painting for 17K at an auction, her regular prices
are about 4k, and she sold another one for 8k to the losing bidder and gave half
to the charity. I suggest you do the same, offer it to the folks who did not get
it and give half to the charity. Everyone is happy
My best

Barbara's suggestion is good....
The other option is to print the other prints with a slight change of colour or something and define them as a variation It could be defined on the print as Variation 1/5 and Variation 2/5 etc etc etc.

I can respond to the part I have experience with at a silent auction
benefit where there was an opening price and people increased by a certain
amount. People entered their registered bidding number for art to be
donated..The 10th and winning bid closing amount was $1,500 for a commissioned
watercolor house painting that had a starting price of $500, if I remember
correctly.. Each person knew they were donating the amount to the benefit.
I don't think angering the winning bidder should be an ethical issue
because they knew it was for a benefit.
In my case price was no object to the winner and I received no benefit

My gut feeling is to charge the other people what you want, but all the
same price and recognizing that the work is now in demand.
(My last four small one of a kind prints, not woodblock prints, each
sold for $500 and that established the price I sell the others.)
I am very curious about how others respond.

Having been on the auctioning end of the process several times it is, or should be, understood that this is a donation and really has no baring on the "real" market value. The winning bidder is most fortunate to have a such a beautiful print to remind them of their generous donation to a favorite non-profit.

Subject: Japan Relief Print
Posted by: Ellen Shipley

Moving right along (no rest for the wicked -- or chronically lazy).  Working on a sketch for the Japan Relief Benefit Print.
This is a giant wave reflected in an umi dragon's eye.  I had to negotiate the design with my son, who has a proprietary interest in the umi dragon, as he has a roll playing character based on the concept.  He wanted to make sure the dragon was portrayed in a positive manor.  I hope this meets with his approval.

I'm tentatively calling it Umi's Tears.

Eye tilted slightly.  Tear moved over.  Don't know what I'd do w/o my scanner and Paint Shop Pro.  ;-y
