I also wish I had David Bull's good advice in my pocket, but I do have access to his encyclopedia on my computer, so that is something! I really appreciated his entry on printing gold, I had been trying to do this myself, and resorted to silkscreen to get a nice silver. Nice color, but not subtle like woodblock! I will try again according to his outline, remembering how many years of experience it takes to do it right!

I was sorry to hear that the June San Antonio Summit has been cancelled. The tsunami has had far reaching effects!

There is still time to register for the Mokuhanga Conference in Kyoto, also in June! www.mokuhanga.jp

Le...

I'm very sorry to hear this. I had been on the fence because of unusual travel
expenses plus two weddings this year which made the San Antonio a true financial
difficulty. On one hand I'm glad I'm not missing it but on the other am very
disappointed for all who had been making the financial stretch to attend.

I am so sorry to hear about the summit being canceled. I was not going because I thought my body could not take the vigorous wonderful schedule. I am sorry for all who had to miss it and especially for Le Green. Let’s hope next year will be better. Bea Gold

I too am so sorry the summit is cancelled. I was unable to go this year due to family things.
This economy has been a tough one on all of us. Le, I am so sorry you have put so much energy into this to have it fail at the last minute.
My best to all

If you have already resorted to silk screen, and you want something better
than metallic ink. I have a very good printmaking friend Cynthia who was
able to silk screen glue and literally gold leaf directly on the print. She
had to use the Extra Thick gold leaf glue and she used the gold leaf that
has a backing paper to it. So it is easier to manipulate. You have to wait a
while after printing before you apply the leaf and the temperature/humidity
of your studio is a major factor. And you need a soft brush to wipe away the
leaf that is not stuck to glue.

Here is a picture http://i.imgur.com/aS5oR.jpg
Her work is very difficult to photograph. A lot of white on white. But you
can see the screen printed gold leaf. Just and idea I thought I'd throw out
there.

Still just messing around with three simple blocks.

Stripe
I started by making a yellow stripe on the plain block.

BlueBackground
Added a blue background (I do like blue).

Subject: Printing - Day 3
Posted by: Ellen Shipley

Better day of printing yesterday.  Hotter weather, so ink dried out faster.  Had to clean the block often and dig out ink in the finer lines with a stylus (tedious task, but worth it).

Now that I've finished printing the set, I'm seriously recarving the block to open up the finer lines.  I drive myself mad sometimes with those fine lines.  Sometimes I think I should be doing engraving, or go back to etching.

Progressing.
