Annie,
I read your blog on your first attempt at wrapping the baren and it made me
laugh out loud....Mine was mostly tape by the time I wrapped it again.
I have tried several different things and found tyvek paper worked ok if you
were careful to always use a slip sheet...it got wet otherwise.
Dave Bull helped me wrap one in St Louis and that was when I really learned...I
also learned you have to be darn strong to hold it so now I have my husband help
hold it and it makes a huge difference to have 4 hands. So anyone who is having
issues with this, don't give up, you can do it. We need these tools so we have
to figure it out!
I think McClains will send them out to be wrapped for you, she showed me a
bottle cap wrapped as a baren by the gal who does it...it was darn cute and made
me groan with envy.
My best to all
Barbara
It is time like this that I would like to be able to, with a twinkle of the nose, be at your side to help with Baren tying.
I recall the first time I did it .... it was unrecognizable as a bamboo husk on a disk.
After the second, third forth time it began to resemble an useable tool.
Secret... the more time you tie them the better it gets... Now I find it is a walk in the park.
I recognize one of the issues is hand strength to hold things in place while continuing on with the other half of the operation.
Clamp... use a clamp as a third hand .... which is what you need.
To refresh you memory Barbara... I show and demonstrated at Boot Camp... (workshops) the method of tying using a piece of material that was equivalent in bulk/weight to a bamboo husk. This is really important in two respects.... You don't waste hard to get bamboo husks and you can practice every day until you get the mind/muscles/method down pat.
Is it Murphy's Law.... If you think it is hard - it will be. If you think it is easy - it will be. Or is that the Peter Principle.

Great advice on mildew. Even tho I live in a dry clime I went and aired out my print storage when I read this thread!
A word about bleach and peroxide. I know from my fiber dyeing days that bleach takes color away and peroxide stops the action. But both are harsh on cloth and I assume paper as well. Perhaps paper can be rinsed somehow with clear water afterward? Blotted or dabbed?

Thank you to McClains for the paper just received--Masa Dosa, sized and
recommended for printing with water based inks.
Before the McClain delivery, I had immediately started and struggled with
hand printing on very heavy dampened paper. I completed some of them for
the Japan Relief Fund. Now I look forward to continuing easier and
faster. I need to experiment to find out whether to dampen or not and the
combination of nori, water, and ink.
Print on...
