If you can make it to the summit I promise you will not be disappointed. I
have been to both previous ones and would not miss one. They are a place
where a lot of learning takes place. We meet one another and that is a
special bonus. Every person I have met at a summit is special and the
talents and sharing are enormous. Go if you can! It is better than any class
or workshop in my opinion.
Gayle if my subject line is off I am not on my computer. My Mac crashed
yesterday. All I have is a grey screen that beeps at me. I am on my husbands
PC and can't tell how to put in a subject line.
Sorry.

I'm mostly a lurker on Baren Forum, but wanted to pop out of the woodwork and say how excited I am to be a part of the Exchange #48 (Mythology). I have a great story that involves a rather creepy experience I had with a local Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) legend/myth which I think will make nice subject matter, if I can just noodle it onto paper correctly-!
And not to ask a TOTALLY lame question, but... since I started doing linocuts & woodcuts in 2006ish, I've pronounced 'baren' as "baron" (like, the dog's name, "Here Baron, here Baron--!" lol). Last fall I bought the Akua Printmaking DVD and on the video, 'baren' was pronounced 'bah-REN.' But then recently I heard "baron" again and so I'm a bit confused. Is there a definitive way to pronounce the name of our little bamboo pressy thing/forum name? I'm embarrassed to ask such a silly question but... well... couldn't find the answer anywhere. And after 5 years of shamefully pronouncing Intaglio as "In-TAG-lio" instead of "in-TAH-lio" (whoops)... well... need to get it right, whatever it is. :)
To officially introduce myself-- I live in Central New York with a couple of greyhounds. I started printmaking in 2005 and have taken a few workshops/classes, but am mostly self-taught. I love printmaking but am not very technically-savvy so working with my 2 presses (a Dick Blick 906 and handmade Bottle Jack press) is challenging and sometimes frustrating. As are the reduction prints I love doing, although I screw them up most of the time... oh well...I suppose you do get better the more you try, right?
Anyway- thanks for including me in the Mythology Exchange, I am super stoked about it! Happy Printing, everyone!

I'm stuck on the greyhounds part and how they stay away from the wet ink.
Either they are well trained or you have them out of the studio Jennifer.
The Summit sounds like it's going to be fantastic! Le is doing a great job.
I'm really sorry I won't be able to make it, but I just wanted to drop a note to tell you about my experience at the last Summit in Vancouver. I couldn't pass up the chance to attend, since I lived within driving distance. But I was a complete beginner, had just barely heard about Moku Hanga and Barenforum and didn't know quite what to expect. I was greeted warmly and openly into the group that mostly knew each other from online posts. I learned so much from everyone. It seems everyone had advice and techniques that you won't find just anywhere, down to the little things, like how to hold your tool, how to store things, how to moisten your paper - too much to mention!
Our side trips were a lot of fun, too. We actually were welcomed into McClain's warehouse, and allowed to paw through all the goodies. It was great! It will be great having them come to San Antonio, too.
I want to encourage anyone who's on the fence (especially if it's because you're just a beginner) to go - IT'S A CHANCE OF A LIFETIME! You'll be amazed by this wonderful group of people.
I'm sorry I can't attend...

This much I know. There is not to be a emphasis or accent on either
syllable. Try it!!! Can that be done by us?

Subject: Feeling peckish

As a change from the relative slash and burn of lino cutting I've gone to pecking at wood again. I've just started a small bookplate engraving on maple wood. I've not done much in the way of lettering in engraving, so this is a bit of a test. I've picked a typeface that's fairly forgiving insofar as it's casual in design and will take a little thickening of line if necessary. The block is 5.2cm x 7.6cm (about 2" x 3")
The rough sketch
The block in progress
I have cut the 'Ex Libris' lettering at the bottom, but nothing else yet. I'm just refining my name at the top slightly, then I'll cut that. The seagull needs a little tweaking; I'll do that after cutting all the letters.

Subject: Blocks being mailed!
Posted by: Maria
Quick update to let everyone know that the blocks are being mailed.
When someone asked me how I planned to cut 113 blocks for this print, I quickly replied: "one at a time" Well, one at a time and a few days later all 113 were in a box awaiting to be sent off. I finished the cutting task yesterday and started packing the freshly cut blocks. Today I managed to mail out about half, phew!
I will have some last minute instructions but they are currently in my "mailing room" and I just don't have the strength to get over there to get my notes. But I thought I'd let everyone know to expect the blocks very quickly now. General instructions are now in html so that our foreign friends can translate if they wish:
