this is not woodblock-related, but certainly in the forefront of a lot of our minds, I'm sure - just checking in to see how our Baren friends in Japan are doing.

best wishes,
Sarah

Dave's okay, Bareners. He sent a message that he's okay, though trains aren't running and he may not get home until tomorrow since he was out and about when the earthquake hit. He wrote from the home of one of his collectors.

Thanx Gayle,

I was worried, as I'm sure we all were. I'm still worried about a friend
who lives in Shiogama, Miyagi. About 10 miles from Sendai on a google map.

Ben,
Welcome! I recently received your print, and I just love it! Great job and wonderful composition (personally, I love the circling hawk - such is life.) If you ever take a look at my artwork, you'll see I'm really into freeway structures, so I really love your card.

And just a quick note: I hope the print's not too disturbing. This is a celebration for sure,

Thanks for the concern from everybody!

The whole affair has actually been nothing but a small inconvenience
for me, but as you have seen on the news reports, it is a very
horrible thing that has happened to many people up in that area.

But perhaps I speak too soon; just a few minutes ago there was an
explosion at one of the reactors at the plant hit by the tsunami. And
even though that is more than 100km away from here, our City Office is
broadcasting a warning to turn the TV on and listen for updates. NHK
is telling people in the area to stay indoors, seal all windows, and
close all possible air vents.

Ready to have a Baren Summit here in Tokyo soon? :-)

Dave

Prints are away.  This is the best signed one.  I had some trouble finding anything that would write on both the very dark prints and the lighter ones.  I opted for a silver pen for the darker prints and dark pencil on the lighter ones.  Not entirely satisfactory, but done.

I can't wait to see what prints I get back in exchange.  8-]

Subject: Senshafuda Project - good news!
Posted by: Dave Bull

Most of the news you have heard from Japan today has not been of the 'good' type - to say the least - but we here at Mokuhankan can perhaps make up for that just a little.

Before I got 'trapped' downtown yesterday by the earthquake, I made a visit to young printer Hirokazu Tetsui. I had gone to see him a couple of months back, and at that time 'signed him up' to do some printing for me - starting with a reprint of the 'Heron and Crow' print in my Gift Print collection, which is currently out of stock following the very successful Xmas season last year. (At the time I asked him to do this job, the senshafuda project had not yet been conceived.)

I knew he hadn't yet started that job, so I went to see him today to show him the senshafuda concept, and see if he would take on this job instead of the Gift print. He didn't need much convincing, and said that he would like to do it. He's all booked up 'till the end of this month, but will keep the early part of April open for this.

That means that he may still be busy with his current work when it comes time to do the colour separations, but that's not a problem, as I know somebody else who is capable of doing that ... :-)

So we're all teed up! I next headed over to the (former) Yoshida Studio building, . . .

Subject: Crumbly carving, seals and a bit of luck
Posted by: Sue

I have carved my lino block some more, as you can see below. As the lino must be about 30 years old it's tough and crumbly, but relents a little and cuts cleaner when warmed up, so I'm persevering. I fully intend to get some fresh lino soon for some other ideas I've had.

However, my great love, wood engraving is still to the fore and I thought I had run out of blocks, hence the quick diversion to lino. But I have just discovered a small 75mm x 53mm maple block hidden in the corner of my block box! So I may try and engrave some seals I saw playing in the shallows at Godrevy, Cornwall, near where I live, alongside the lino block. I have sketches ready:

Subject: 365 Days of Print ? Daily Woodcut (!)

We’ve all heard about the struggles of the newspaper industry as information continues to become more and more digitized. For the month of March, I’m a guest artist on 365daysofprint.com, a blog that celebrate news in print by inviting guest artists to produce and post a work of art in reaction to each day’s stories for the month. The approaches that artists take vary widely. Personally, I scan the New York Times, read the few articles that jump out at me, then create a simple composition that relates to the story. The relationship is sometimes fairly straight forward, other times I arrive at the image through a few stages of association. I’m interested in how someone sitting in, say, Charlotte, NC can uses his experiences and reference points to imagine and make sense of, say, a gun battle at the palace in Congo.

I’m attempting a woodcut a day. At the end of the month I’ll assemble a single piece to represent all of March 2011.

Here is yesterday’s:

Subject: HELP JAPAN
Posted by: Jeff Dean

We all know the situation in Japan by now. For the next week, I am donating 100% of money from sales of my prints to Japan relief. I'm not certain where the donations will go at this point, but I will follow up with every donor, and I assure you that 100% of any money collected will go to the relief effort.
