The tugboat prints are truly beautiful. It took a bit of looking
around to see that they are multiple block prints. They make it sound
a lot easier to create the prints than it really is. But maybe that
will make people want to try and not scare them off. Also interesting
that they are a collaborative effort, wonder who does what?

Dave, I don't know anything about Ethel Kirkpatrick. I found the
prints interesting because they depict a time in history. The
landscape she did has changed through time. I never thought of
landscapes as history, this shows me how important they can be.
Recording a part of life no matter what part is its own legacy.

Delightful prints indeed! they bring Whistler to mind -
surely someone in the UK must know something about the artist??
Xmas cheer to all!!

OK, I suggest we all write our own autobiographies so more is know about
us...years from now someone will be happy we did so. Here is all this wonderful
work and we know little about the artist. What a shame...did she have kids? Are
they artists? None of mine are but I have hopes for my grandchildren!
Maybe we should fill stuff in on the who is Baren site with a couple of
paragraphs that are autobiographical, not just woodblock but our whole art
lives. I don't think I even have a photo there...sad but true.
Just a thought.... as if we have time, but we should take time.
My best

I was surprised to see they thought she studied with Fletcher or was at least
influenced by him... the art world is indeed small.
Thanks for doing this research for us Viza.

You know, Barbara... I was thinking along the same lines. We have these
wonderful exchanges going into the archives and, long after we are gone, someone
will research the 'Baren movement', much like the 'white line' printmaking or
the 'Prairie Print Makers'. It would be nice if we could get short biographies
from past Exchange participants as well as a history of Baren and submit them to
the collections at the Spencer and at Lexington. It would be greatly
appreciated by those MFA researchers 100 years from now.

I wonder what Ethel Kirkpatrick would have written about her date of
birth? Was it 1869, or 1870 - since both are listed?
More puzzling, however, was the discovery that those who say she was
born in 1870 place her death in 1941 (making her 61 years old at death),
while those who place her birth in 1869 state that she lived until
1966... " and outlived Lily (her sister) by 64 years!!! Hm mm...

I've met the people from Tugboat, they're based in Pittsburgh, PA.
Their woodcuts are really nice, very detailed; not exactly my favorite
style, but obviously very well crafted. I'm really glad they've been
featured there, that should increase their visibility well beyond the
Pittsburgh area where they are quite well known and respected.
