People who receive their baren posts through the digest missed Mark's message about a way to get used rubber press blankets. Check the archives for the restored post -- It's Message #5.

When I was in graduate school I had a job taking care of the studio.
We used WD-40 on a soft cloth to lightly coat the roller and then used
steel wool as Barbara explains. The WD-40 helps loosen the rust.

Although I have become something of a lurker in recent months, I couldn't let this one go without a reply.

My particular version of woodblock printmaking doesn't actually require a press and many engravers burnish all of their work (I posses a silver spoon worn down flat on one side of the bowl after being used by Pamela Hughes for decades).

I do love the rich velvety blacks that a press gives me (I seldom use any other colour) and, after a series of other presses, I was lucky enough to find and restore a Victorian Albion handpress made in 1865. It is a beautiful object in itself and I feel privileged to use it almost every day and am very aware of those unknown printers who used it before me. It is simply a delight. Inking is done by hand and when the bar is pulled, one feels direct contact through the press to the block and it is possible to gauge exactly the pressure that is being applied.

You can see the restoration here - scroll down read from the end. The work continues as I still need to have a handle made.

Andy,
This worn down spoon burnisher you've acquired that was used by
Pamela Hughes sounds utterly delightful! Would love to see a photo
of it.

Since I use a baren, I don't need a press, but if I were ever to get
one it would definitely be an antique like this Albion you have. It
would look great next to my great grandma's antique Singer treadle
sewing machine.

Take care and keep up your great work,
Bette.

I'm considering buying a rebuilt Wright combination press for $2,800 27" x48"

Does anyone think this is a BAD deal?

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who responded! Lots to think about, and lots of
good information.

Also, re: Maria's point about rubber blankets, if there's a small
local printer near you, you might be able to ask them for their rubber
press blankets. Commercial printers need to replace them every 3
months or so, but the blankets still have a lot of life left in them.
Most printers are glad to donate them to artists.

yes, I have personal experience from a chicken roosting on my press years
ago.... I nearly shot my children for leaving the studio door open...nothing
eats metal like chicken - - - - and I did not see it immediately so it ate into
the steel roller before I noticed it. The stain is still there but it has been
polished! ha

I have a combo press and love it...but it is a Dickerson so don't know Wright.
Do you have a photo?
Originally this press was made by Printmakers Machine Co, part of Graphic
Chemical but is now made by Conrad. Wright might be a copy?

Hello everyone, the Signup page for the 2011 New Year Rabbit exchange is
now open.

This marks a special year as we will be completing the twelve year
cycle.....it seems just like yesterday that we were doing the Dragons
cards....that was way back in 2000 !!!! Congratulations to those of you
that have been able to stick along the way and participated in these New
Year celebratory exchanges....

You can access the signup form from the main Baren page or go to:

http://barenforum.org/new_year/rabbit.html

The 2010 Tiger Gallery is under construction so not all the card images
have been uploaded. Thanks as always to Carole Baker for her help in
scanning the images.

thanks again......Julio Rodriguez (Skokie, Illinois)
