Greetings fellow artists,
I will be presenting a paper entitled “MokuHanga in the Digital Age” at the 1st International MokuHanga Conference in Kyoto in June 2011.
The paper and presentation will focus on “the resurgence of interest in MokuHanga printing and how the desire to learn technical skills has grown exponentially, while few artists can study in Japan with carving and printing masters. The internet is making these skills and techniques available to wider audiences through forums, blogs, videos of master carvers and printers, suppliers, and museum collections.”
I will, of course, be covering David Bull, the Baren Forum, and innovators like Mike Lyon and others, but I am asking for your unique input on how you interpret this topic and incorporate it into your work.
If you have comments or suggestions, please send them to me offline.
Thanks in advance to this wonderful and diverse group of artists. (now back to carving for Exchange #47…….)

Yes, the news last week - that the Japanese post office will no longer
accept packages of over 16 ounces for delivery to the US - is causing
immense problems, as you can imagine.
Seamail is still running (for now), so Baren Mall orders placed by US
customers will take somewhat longer to arrive ('somewhat' ... hah!),
and of course my own business will be disrupted too (although
individual prints in my current series are light enough to slip
through ...)
As soon as she heard about this problem, Maria jumped in immediately
with an offer to 'warehouse' some of my stuff in Vegas, andact as a
'forwarder' for me. (Just 'typical' Maria behaviour ... save a guy's
life before breakfast ... "Ho-hum ... what's next ..." :-)
But that solution will not work for the Mall, as every order is
different. So if you need a particular tool quickly, you should head
to McClains' instead, as they are stocking in the US of course. (I
presume they will be getting shipments by sea ...)
Fun and games ...

I cooked a turkey, beans, taters, yams, home-made rolls,
cranberry/mushroom/walnut stuffing and pecan-rum pie!!!
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone that celebrates it and for those who don't
have a happy day anyway.
On this day and every day I personally want to THANK BAREN and its humble
founder for everything they have done and continue to do for "amateurs" of
the art of xylography. May everyone's fingers be nimble, tools be sharp,
rice paste be mushy, and all colors turn harmonious.
Maybe I'll tackle fixin' the world economy after a piece of that pie...
Maria
