Maurice R. Bebb, late of Chicago and Muskogee, OK printed up until he
was in his 90's, and I would venture to say that 95% of his soft ground
and aquatint etchings were printed on satin. There were a variety of
reasons, but those of you who have seen his work know that he did
amazing prints of birds, and he found that satin was the only thing that
could give him a white that looked like a bird's breast.

Unfortunately, Mr. Bebb passed away 10-15 years ago. He was an amazing
artist and a true character. I've printed on some of the satin he used,
and found it easy to work with...no reason it wouldn't work with most
relief techniques in my mind.

Louise
Sorry! I missed a step in my instructions - hit "enter flash enhanced version" on the left of the screen. That will take you to the screen with the tabs along the top edge.

Thanks for introducing us to Bebb, Dean! His work is beautiful!
He'd been a florist (and birder) most of his life, and entered
the art world after retirement!

Do you know if he printed his plates on dry satin, or did he
dampen them a bit?

Here is a quick google exploration of his work.

well i have decided that i need a press. i have ran some small white
line woodblocks through my etching press and they turn out so much
better! Since i'm just a poor farm girl i will have to build it myself
one little bit at a time. i think i have decided to build one of these
http://www.dougforsythegallery.com/Press.html. till then i will just
have to press harder with my baren.

Viza, you should consider building a bottle-jack press!
Very easy, probably have almost all the items sitting around in your "farm"
(or house), cheap 2-ton jack...you're in business. They print excellent
woodcuts and wood engravings.

Maria,
I have thought about the bottle jack press and i am very interested
but i am not sure if a) i could make one big enough i want to print
minimally 22X30 paper size and b) it will be enough pressure for the
huge open areas of color.

No, you are right, a bottle-jack will definitely not have enough pressure
for something that big, even if you made one big enough.
The pressure greatly diminishes as you increase the size of the bed. I
followed a discussion once on a letterpress forum that got pretty technical
into the physics of it.

Etching press it is! Have you thought about Thomas presses? Are they still
in business?
Also, check www.briarpress.org for classifieds, although most of the stuff
is letterpress.
And you may want to check with Universities or Colleges in your area;
sometimes they have to get rid of equipment and sometimes, sadly, they close
out their printmaking departments.

Hey, go for it! Build one. I have that same DVD about how to build one. I
bought a Whelan but am thinking of building a press for my lone litho stone.
You only live once, you know.

Maria :-)
