Charles..............What is a "nature printer"..........one whose
work is based on nature? or one who works with primitive methods?
New term to me. Sounds very time consuming.

Nature printing is the practice of printing from a natural matrix, the two
most popular examples may be fish printing and leaf printing. It is a
wonderfully enticing and absorbing way to print, hardly time consuming at
all and much fun.

But it doesn't stop at fish and leaves and when I attended the Nature
Printing Society gathering a couple of years ago I was amazed at the variety
and beauty of many of the creations that these nice folk make.

Our own Charles was one of the workshop instructors and gave a masterful
account of the basics of foilography, which entails making your nature
collage, pressing a sheet of foil over it and then printing from that
matrix, either relief or intaglio.

My own modest examples:

Thanks for the explanation, Maria; this would be nice to do with kids.

Thanks, Maria and Charles, for opening up a whole new world of nature
printing. I can see why Maria would be intrigued to take that
workshop............and do so well with it.

I have made one try at fish printing.......not too successful. Would
like to try the foliography but would it work well without a press?

Eliza,
I have found that almost any water-based materials including crayon d arch
crayons, watercolors, water soluble markers and so on will release from foil
with damp paper and a piece of felt over the top and a rolling pin...we use it
with kids making collograph plates all the time with amazing results. Also we
use rubber fish...they work very well and with sumi paper you get it all, thin
inks is the rule here. You can layer pieces of cardboard or glue down string or
whatever and it works.
My best
Barbara

That was confusing, I meant the string and cardboard for the collograph plates,
not the fish prints...good grief.
Sorry

Foilography is best printed with a press, I think, but EVERYTHING can be
printed without a press for sure!

It really doesn't take a lot of pressure because the plates can be high
relief. The differences in "height" give the print that soft "shaded" look.

As for fish and most nature prints, you can (and some purists say "you
should") print with your fingers so you can feel the print come alive.
Japanese paper is best because it is thin and strong, but there are many
substitutes.

Have fun!!!

In the workshop, we printed with a bottle-jack press, but see Charles's
website for a substitute "palm press". A wooden 3" doorknob gives
scrumptious results in all types of printing, from heavy nature relief to
fine engravings. Charles Morgan website:
http://www.mossworks.com/

He has .pdf's on how to make the bottle-jack press or the palm press and a
host of other information.

Thanks Charles!!!

Maria
