Hello Baren Friends!
It's mid-June and very quiet on our list, but it is time to get the creative juices flowing! Here's a little update from the Exchange Manager corner:
Julio informs me that Exchange 44 should be mailed out to participants within a couple of days. Thanks, Julio, for all of your hard work coordinating this exchange!
Exchange 45- "Maps" is well underway. There are several participants who haven't yet confirmed that they still plan to participate. I will be emailing you again asking for your confirmation, as well as posting the list of MIAs to the general list.
The last day to drop out of Exchange 45 without penalty is July 1st. Prints are due to the coordinator on or before August 1, 2010.
And now for the big announcement!
EXCHANGE 46 signups begin on July 1, 2010. Prints will be due to the coordinator on or before November 1, 2010 (that sounds so far away right now!).
This exchange has a paper size of "other," meaning that we can change things up a bit. For those of you craving a smaller format, whether to save on paper and therefore expense, or simply to work on something small enough to fit in your hand, the paper size will be 5 x 7 inches (about 12.5cm x 17.5 cm) There is no theme for this exchange so the subject matter is completely up to you!
***You may have noticed that the last couple of exchanges have been below our limit of 30 participants. That has been a bit of a concern for me as the exchange manager. Our goal is to have a complete list of participants, as well as eager artists on the wait list. We've even had exchanges in the past where we've had to create a second participant list.
We all get busy with whatever is dominating our lives at the time, and sometimes we have to cut back on a few things. That's understandable. Life happens. Most of us are feeling the economic crunch as well, which makes it harder for some to participate because of the expense involved.
The upcoming exchange, with its smaller format should help with the expenses. Many of us have scrap that has collected over time from our larger format prints (who wants to part with any of that glorious, yummy paper?). One could probably print an edition just on the remnants of past editions, which makes this exchange virtually free, for the materials at least. The only other expense to worry about then is the postage to get it there and get it back again. We have nearly four months from the time we sign up for the exchange until it is due. That should be enough time to save a few coins each day to put towards the postage. The only other factor is your time, and it's up to you to decide how you use that. There is such a huge dividend coming to you in return for your efforts.
I encourage and invite each one of you to join the exchanges. Whether you're a long time pro, a shy beginner, or somewhere in between, exchanges are a great opportunity to build your skills, your portfolio, your confidence, and even friendships. We learn so much from each other. Don't let this opportunity pass you by.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Kristine

Years ago I heard a recording of the sound that the tiger made, it is a furious combination of the growling tiger and the screaming Britisher. The irony is that it was made by a Frenchman as a gift to the Sultan! I love the print, there seems a business opportunity there for a card deal with the V&A if you chose. All the best

So the smoke has cleared, and I have realized that it's been ages since I posted anything on here. The answer to that is really two-fold. Firstly, I've been incredibly busy in the studio... a very good thing! Secondly, I have rebuilt my website to host all my archived prints to date... something that will continue to grow.
I have been doing a lot of work with mezzotint lately. The process is definitely labour-intensive, but I really love the aesthetic that comes along with all of the hard work. It's been a bit of a learning curve for me, but in doing so I think I've managed to pick up more and more with each print. Currently I'm on my 4th mezzotint in the last 3 months. Here's a look at some of them starting from my first attempt through to my latest as well as my current project (the copper plate) at the end.
