I had printed in silk – “organza”. I don't know the name of this hard and
transparent silk fabric in English.
It will be exhibited next Tuesday in a gallery and restaurant – Asia 70, in
Sao Paulo, Brazil and it need to be first time…
So after Tuesday I'll put the photo in my blog.
I didn't damp the fabric, it was dry and I had used typographic ink.
I did with some linen and it work fine too. I tried with a softer fabric and
it has shredded.

Julio,
Nice to see you printing with the vandercook.... we all seem to need a faster way to make prints
What kind of ink? Are you having any trouble with the paper shifting?
Nice Bird, let us see a photo of it completed. Nice job of dropping the paper, it took me a year and finally Dave's directions to learn how to do that consistently.
My best

I printed on sheer silk organza using basic oil relief inks and shina
woodblocks. They came out really crisp and clear, but my blocks are fairly
simple, not detailed scenes. The only downside is that the fabric presses
into the block and leaves the woven texture behind.

I love your method of printing, especially the masking of the bird. And I noticed you were a leftie too. ;-> Lefties unite!

Julio, I appreciated watching the little video of you printing with
your Vandercook. You make it look easy, but I"ll bet you had the
particulars all figured out before you filmed it. Did I hear birds in
the background? Appropriate you would be printing an image of a
bird. Oh, and I too am a leftie.

Yikes, how embarrassing....that was not to get out....it was a test post to
the new version of our blog software MT 5.02.....uhmmm....was suppose to
be draft post only.

I'll post an image of the final print after the exchange #44 is out, don't
want to spoil surprises for anyone on the exchange.....

The reason I am using a piece of paper to cover the bird body is that is
suppose to be white (the color of the paper) but I also wanted to have
some embossing on the body to simulate feather patterns....so how do I
adhere to the rules of the exchange ( a reduction SINGLE block print) and
still achieve the results I want ????

So what I did was to not totally carve out the body but leave 'feather'
like lines inside the body area....but to cover them before printing the
green background so they would not print green and then go over the body
area with the baren to achieve a more pronounce embossing of the
patterns....so this way in one single block (and single pass) I get both
the white body & the embossed feather patterns......

I guess I could also have covered the pattern area with a piece paper
while inking the block so no ink got inside the body.

thanks....next time I'll make sure to wear my printing apron !!!

Julio

Again I had some fun with this print. Also, an accomplishment: I made mold in Vegas! I didn't think it was possible, but there it was...tiny bits of round fungus right on some of my paper. For the record, the New Hosho paper did not mold at all, the proof paper got the most mold and the Stonehenge Cream somewhere in between. Oh, HOW I made the mold...too long inside the plastic, too hot in the studio, too lazy or dumb to put stack in fridge.

I can't really help mysef when printing I like to try different papers and see the paper "change" the final print. Stonehenge Cream is tough to print on (literally! hard stuff) but some very nice results and registers very well because it is thicker than the New Hosho.

Here are the blocks in sequence:
