Maria, I'm a little confused about what you are agreeing with in
Jeff's message about mineral spirits. Spirits are different than oil,
no? He is advocating using "spirits". You are advocating using
"oil". Am I reading that correctly and that there is a difference
between the two?

Any kind of oil will work equally well for cleaning up wood, lino or
metal plates. Use the cheapest you can find which is usually a store
brand in a gallon container. I like to follow that with a squirt of
rubbing alcohol - it really cuts the oily residue and leaves surfaces
squeaky clean. It is regularly on sale at various supermarkets &
pharmacies and can be picked up several bottles at a time. Baby oil
is a nice consistency, but after a while I got so that I couldn't
stomach the smell. Veggie oil is odorless - more or less, at least
not sickly sweet smelling. Why use anything petroleum based if you
don't need to?

I was agreeing with the part about

>"But my suggestion is to conserve materials and to be

> materials for the job."

Not the same, mineral oil is commonly known as "baby oil", while mineral
spirits is one of the mildest solvents available.
I have ceased buying mineral oil, with my last pint-sized bottle about done.
I've used two pints in the past 7 years; I think that's pretty darned good
for curtailing some use of petroleum products.
I am currently using the safflower oil or citrus based cleaners, followed by
the vinegar-based Windex all surface cleaner.
I'm happy with that.

Regardless of what we use in our private studios, the amounts we use are
pretty insignificant; I think those of us who care about the environment do
what we can when we can and if everyone would do the same the world would be
a better place.
I will never forget an image of a "go-green" march in which some of the
folks holding up "go-green" signs were standing squarely on top of their
Chevy Tahoe (full-sized SUV).

This is where we agree to disagree. I teach a lot of young people and think the less they are exposed to toxic chemicals the better.
When I show them how to clean up oil based ink using oil and then soap and water they are just amazed that it works and happy to help save the environment in their one small way. There is considerably less danger of spontaneous combustion using salad oil and certainly less danger to their bodies. We are all more sensitive to chemicals as our environments off gas them to us, as a group we have more allergies and more problems with sensitivity. The less exposure we have the better. It takes a little more elbow grease, but the safety is worth it.
I person starting to make prints at 18 could be exposed to bad things for 50 years. Sadly I need both hands to count the number of printmakers I know who have died of cancer. Maybe no connection, but safer is better than sorry.
My best

I'll only add that once we had a veg oil 'get away' in the
studio at school. Some college kids don't clean as thoroughly
as one would wish. When that escaped oil went 'south' (turned
rancid) it was memorably stinky!

Crisco/shortening can also go rancid, but it seems to me easier
to control than oil, and I've converted to it! It doesn't take
much to do the job! A teaspoon can go a long way and it doesn't
drip!

Baby oil/mineral oil is a petroleum product.

Forgive me for tooting my own horn. I was recently interviewed by our local newspaper about my art and the 12 Views of the Shiawassee River series I am working on. It was published today, front page and in color.

I was pretty happy with the article. I proudly promote moku hanga AND conservation.
