Viza,
we do have the monthly sales list that Mary is doing...I think this is a good idea. I have a lot of stuff but teach a lot so do use it. The mall has a big chisel I have been meaning to get on there so maybe this month I will make it happen. Trading stuff is sure cheaper than buying it. This chisel has been around a while although still new so will be at old prices.

I found the Speedball baren very frustrating also. Being thick and
soft, it catches the shoulders of the cut areas and causes them to print
if there's any ink on them at all. Also, the handle on mine constantly
works loose. My feeling of control and security is greatly diminished
when the handle isn't rigid, so the screws need to be tightened
frequently. I don't recommend it even for linoleum printing.

Isn't that why we have the advertisements section of the Baren each
month? To sell or trade stuff we don't use, or want to store, any
longer?

I use a ball baring baren and a nice hand made bamboo baren I got at hanga
bootcamp a zillion years ago...i have also been known to use a bone folder
for tiny prints and a rice paddle for super burnishing and my elbow for
embossing. As for between the baren and the print...i use butcher paper;
its way cheaper than cooking parchment and its plastic lined. The plastic
side faces the block and the paper side works great facing the baren. It
doesn't work the other way around. Also the plastic side can be wiped down
with a baby butt wipe if ink gets on it so it can be used again and again
and again and again...

Barens
As yet my attempts at moku hanga have been unsuccessful, for reasons other than the barens. I have a very cheap plastic baren pufchased from the baren mall. It seems fine. I also made a baren out of part of a palm. ie, the broad, lower section of the frond. I needed to soak it for 2 days, so that it was malleable enough to shape. I attached it to a plywood disc that I cut with a hole saw. I attached a door handle to it. It also does a good job. The base of the baren has fibres running in parallel ridges.and is extemely sturdy.
