Just a thought Dave -- have you looked into print on demand? I'm not sure what
the print quality of Lulu.com et al are, but it would give you a low-volume
answer. Sadly you'd still lose out on the videos etc, but still...

Yes, I have looked into this. I use Lulu's printing service for my B&W
story books. Reasonable prices, quick turnaround, and good quality.
But for a full colour book of this size, the per copy manufacturing
cost from them is $17.50, and that's before we talk about shipping it
around - from them to me, and then from me to the reader. So we would
be looking at somewhere close to $40 to get it into the hands of the
readers ... and of course, no video, no audio.
By doing it as an eBook, it makes it possible to get the thing into
people's hands for a very low price. Instead of paying lumberjacks and
truck companies, it _all_ goes straight into my own pocket, so I can
just price it at what I would like to have as a royalty, ignoring
manufacturing costs completely. (Speaking of the download version here)
Nope, there's no way around it. Just upgrade your Acrobat Reader to
9.x! :-)
Now that I've had the experience of producing this thing, I tell you,
the ideas just start coming thick and fast:
- I'm of course going to do some 'supplementary' volumes, one each for
printing and carving. (Not this week - these are going to take some
time ...)
- Each time I have an exhibition, I usually also show some prints from
my own collection (old stuff, not what I made), along with
explanations. At the Gallery Talks I chat about them, and what makes
them interesting. That wouldn't be a bad idea for a series of these
RichMedia eBooks ... 'David's Choice - personal 'gallery tours' of
items from David's collection. Each print in hi-res, along with my
audio chat about it ...
- How about [Baren] itself? We could do a very interesting book on
our group - one page per person, including a few of their prints,
along with an audio clip from the person talking about their work, and
of course video of them at work. I'd _love_ to see that book!
- I'm sure there are lots more possibilities ...
Dave
(PS Also, this is kind of irrelevant, but I'm really looking forward
to taking a copy of the CD version of my book downtown to the Apple
store next week. I can't wait to see this thing in 'Full Screen Mode'
on one of those new astonishing 27 inch screens! It also makes me
regret that I don't have an HD video camera ... Have to start saving
my pennies!)

I'm glad Dave wrote the above line, because it prompted me to offer a long overdue thank you to him and everyone who
is a part of Baren. I came to printmaking by accident in January of 2002. Not long after I made my first print, I
discovered Baren and immediately joined the community. The knowledge and resources available here have helped me immensely
over the years, but the best part is knowing that I have a whole family of people across the globe all connected by one central
passion -- printing. I honestly don't know how I would have learned so much is so little time without it, so thank you very, very much.

That sounds like a great project !
One thing I thought would be good is to publish a book like this of our
New Year
Exchange prints, high-res images available also on CD and with video or
audio interviews of any artist
willing... Although we are still two years away from completing the full
New Year circle (500+ prints,
50+ artists have participated here and there each year) the Baren
sponsored project could get started now
and with each new year a new update could be released and sent out to
participants.
Who knows where this technology will be by 2012 ?
