Bareners
-- concerning the thrill of partaking in exchanges...
as a relative' oldey', i can say that each time i take part in an exchange
it is an amazing opportunity to learn --
all the papers , techniques, inks , all written down in the colofon

because of my participation, i now have a huge collection of prints
many of which i have shown at the Univ. of Maine at Machias Art Galleries
in conjunction with shows of my own woodcuts
everybody loves them

especially useful are the chinese new year post cards
which i have taken into middleschool and HS and college classrooms
to inspire the kids in designing their own 'year of the' post card

i hang collages of certain ones like DOG , PIG ,RAT , horse
on a 3 x 5 foam core backing easy display in classes or gallery
when a baren memeber visited me this summer
she was able to see and point out her piece of the Puzzle Cairn
which i also have hanging

you 'newbys' have alot to look forward to-
i consider the BAREN EXCHANGE PROGRAM a good addiction !!

the most useful way to see how woodcut is done,
for me , has always been looking at alot of woodcuts.
speaking specifically about the carving tools used
and the marks made-
an exchange is a treasure trove of information
on carving

maybe my exchange #41 will be in the mailbox today !

April-- could you post that address for the SURIMONO PORT FOLIO again, Please

thanks Gillyin gatto machias Maine

Chicago's Columbia Center for the Book and Paper Arts is
sponsoring this wonderful exhibit, coordinating with other
activities.

Founded in 1729, the Derge Parkhang is a world cultural
treasure, a repository of the cultural memory, literature and
art of the Tibetan people. The Parkhang stores more than 300,000
woodblocks that are used to publish sutra, commentaries and
histories of Tibetan Traditional Buddhism.

This is just a reminder, and a few more YouTube snippets, about
the wonderful exhibit at Columbia College's Center for the Book
and Paper, in Chicago.

I am grateful to know more about Tibet and it's history, since
the little Lhasa Apso dog that I love is part of the threatened
cultural heritage of Tibet.

Hello, I am trying to find printmaking paper for intaglio printing that is about 20 x 16 inches or so. The bigger paper is expensive to ship. Could you recommend a good paper that will be not too expensive?
Thank you, Guadalupe

Dan Smith is having a 20% off sale? I don't see it at their site.
I'm a WA resident. Maybe it only applies to out of staters.

Re Exchange #43. Chuban ? Is this the size of the print, or the size of the paper to be printed on? When will the "gate" 4 #43 be open?

I just wanted to congratulate Viza on her apple woodcuts for the lottery. I have always liked your work and I'm vicariously thrilled that you landed this commission and did such a nice job. Happy too that it was connected to Etsy of all places....gives one hope......!

I've been silent for a bit but just started carving again (after a long hiatus) for exchange 42. The current economy coupled with marital politics finally drove me to go back to work and I started a new job two months ago and that's consuming most of my energies--I didn't even set foot in my little studio for 3 months. I'm carving a little block of what I think is Elm? Birch? for the keyblock that a local carpenter left behind. It's finely grained and carving pretty well so far; although I've only just finished outlining with the toh; we'll see what happens when I start in with the little bull nose chisels how chippy or forgiving it is. I'll post some pics to my blog again later this weekend if I can find the camera.

Glad to be back,

Andrew Stone
