There are two updates to the Baren blog, a short news clip about woodblock
printmaker Nick Wrobleski from Madison Wisconsin and another
Karen Kunc video, this time at OSU.

Subject: [Baren 39822] woodblock class, but not the norm
Send Message: To this poster

Hello everyone,
I took an interesting class this weekend from Marty Vreedes, a printmaker from New Zealand. It took place at Crows Shadow Institute for the Arts in Pendleton Oregon.
http://www.crowsshadow.org/pages/home
A long drive for me, 4 1/2 hours each way but just beautiful country. Down the Columbia Gorge for 150 miles and then south on the plateau where you can see literally to the curve of the earth. Ochre wheat fields and yellow mustard fields and winter wheat just turning a fabulous shade of spring green, it looks like green very short hair all over the ground. Wonderful sunsets and sunrises and the air is so clean and fresh...just an amazing experience.
The class was additive woodblock. Marty used a very thin veneer that was cut with scissors to shape and glued down on the block. Not exactly what I was expecting but interesting. In order to ink, one could use a small piece of thin old litho plate next to the raised spot and ink with oil based inks. To use other inks you would have to carve away around the shapes.
So it was big shape printing, with layers of wood. The layering added surprising depth to the images when it was printed. We did use a press but can see it being done as easily with a baren. Where the veneer was double thick, it gave an interesting white halo abound the image. Marty's work is all social commentary about New Zealand, where the indigenous peoples have been treated unfairly, similar to to the treatment of Native people in the USA. We learned a lot about the country and the culture. Not exactly what I expected but certainly a weekend very well spent. We also learned how to print upside down through a mask to keep the paper spotlessly clean. I had not done this in this way before so that in itself was quite enlightening.
Marty showed us pictures of his school in NZ and how the students build their own presses and rollers, he teaches at the Universal College of Learning in Wanganui, New Zealand...If I was younger I might sign up for this class. He says it is because NZ peoples have learned to make it themselves since everything is so expensive to ship there. I told him about the barenforum so hope he will listen in. It does not sound like he has much free time with his teaching and his art and his volunteer work.
He came to Crows Shadow on a Fullbright scholarship, which is pretty impressive in itself. He was pretty taken with the Columbia River. Although he lives in close to paradise in NZ, he was impressed with the vastness of Oregon and the size of things.
Apparently you can drive across NZ in a couple of hours and it takes about 12 to go from one end to the other. Hard to think of living in such a small country for us wild west open spaces folks! ha.

I would strong suggest that you go to the Graphic Chemical & Ink website
(www.graphicchemical.com) for the widest variety of papers available. In
addition to the more traditional sheets that we've carried for years, we
have, in the past 2-3 years, added hundreds of thin sheets from Japan,
Bhutan, and Thailand etc.

For heavier sheets used in intaglio or litho, I would really suggest the
Graphic Heavyweight, Antique White. It's very affordable but has most of
the whistles and bells (100% rag, neutral pH etc.) It's less expense
because the middlemen are out of the picture. It comes in three sizes
and has been around for over 80 years.

Hi Fellow [Bareners]--
There have been a few questions sent out regarding exchanges in general, and Exchange 43 in particular. I'm hoping this reply will help clarify a few things for all. First, to the upcoming exchange itself:

Apologies to all those whose time zone may have been missed by this general information. If you need more specific information, try this link: http://www.greenwichmeantime.nl/

A few of you have asked questions regarding sign-ups for the exchanges, specifically
about who is eligible to participate. Directly from the [baren] forum site comes this bit of information:

"Sign-up is of course open to any [Baren] member, but with one qualification: first crack at each exchange is given to members who did not participate in the one immediately preceding it. Once this 'early sign-up' period has passed, other members are free to join."

Early sign-up takes place for about a week, giving those who have not participated in the previous exchange first chance at the spaces available. Following the early sign-up period, those signing up who have participated in the previous exchange will be added to the list.

Additional information is available on our website at: http://www.barenforum.org/exchange/ and at http://www.barenforum.org/exchange/rules.html .

Hope this helps clear up any misunderstanding of information that has been previously passed along.

Thanks,

Kristine

P.S. ATTENTION, Exchange 42 participants: The last day to drop from the exchange without penalty is October 1st. Please be sure you have checked in with exchange coordinator Tibi Chelcea regarding your status by this date.

Subject: [Baren 39826] Washington Lottery Ad
Send Message: To this poster

Hi,I just wanted to share my exciting news. No i didn't win the lottery but
i was contacted by Washington Lottery's ad agency (they found me on etsy) to
create five woodblock apples for this ad. They are all moku hanga prints
carved from shina and Lauan plywood. I used watercolors and
pigment dispersions and printed on Rives BFK. I will post the individual
prints on my blog sometime after we get a good hard frost. I have been so
busy in the garden i haven't had much time for printing lately.

Hello everyone.

Thank you for being patient and trusting me with your prints. Almost all went out the door today and tomorrow the remaining 3 will be mailed. It is a great group of prints and I'm sure you'll enjoy looking at them. It has been a pleasure to coordinate for all of you. I had a few snags with the colophon but I still am pleased. I apologize if some information was omitted. At least I'm ready for next time. It was thrilling to get the packages from around the world and I loved the personal notes from many of you. You all deserve a big hand. Thanks again. Joe Taylor

I'm sorry but now I'm even more confused. In the past everyone signed up on the 1st of the month. Now it sounds like there are two signups, one on the 1st of the month and one on the 8th? What does 'for about a week' mean?

What happened to the holding pen list... where previous exchange members signed up on the 1st, held at the bottom and then were added to the exchange list once the week was up?
