Found a very nice and instructive video taken at a Karen Kunc Reduction
Workshop held in 2008 at the CCCC. It's about 25 minutes long and is a
summary of a three day workshop. Very instructive, full of details,
personal tips and also you get to see Karen making stencils, inking and
printing in the style she's so well known for.

Worth a look or two for sure.....

This is to invite everyone to an exhibition of my work at the Print
Arts Northwest gallery at the WA County Museum on the Rock Creek
Campus of Portland Community College. The Opening Reception is Sept.
17 from 5:30 - 8 pm. I hope if you are in the area you'll drop by &
say hello. Most of the work will be Solar Plate Intaglio - there is
more information at http://www.printartsnw.org I haven't been making
woodblock prints much in the last two years because the pain in my
hand was just too great.

Husband and I went to the hand doctor together yesterday (it was a his
and hers appointment) and it looks like surgery for both of us this
fall. Mine will have me out of the woodblock picture until January,
his will only lay him up a few days! This is not fair! He doesn't
even do woodblock printmaking. It seems like we are having one part
or another fixed daily. Be prepared all ye of tender years! (And
thank goodness for Medicare - a successfully run government
program. ;-)

Cheers ~

I learned so much from the Karen Kunc video, almost like being in the
workshop! Thanks for sharing it.

Hello Bob : Thank you. I will look forward to exhibiting your print.

Arte Desarrollo Humano means art-human development. In 2005 I started giving human development voluntary classes
(self-esteem, forgiveness, communication) at a Youth Shelter. They are very restless so did not pay much attention.

We included the art part and printmaking and it became easier to teach. I started doing art exhibits with their work.
The girls were very proud and we could also make diffusion for the shelter.

Hi Everyone!

It's hard to believe it, but here we are already at September 10th. Exchange 42 is well underway by this time. Just a reminder to all participants to let coordinator Tibi Chelcea know that you are participating. You can just zip an email off by going to the Ex. 42 coordinator link on the [baren] site. The final deadline to drop out of the exchange is October 1st, not too far away. If you know right now that you are not going to be able to fulfill your obligation as a participant, please let Tibi know. That way those on the waiting list can have time to jump in to pick up the slack. If you are not started on your print yet...well, it might be time. ;)

Exchange 43 is truly knocking at the door. Sign-ups begin Oct. 1st! Deadline for submitting finished prints is Nov. 1st. This exchange has some interesting elements to it. First, it has a predetermined paper size (chuban, approx 10" x 7.5"). Second, it is to have a theme. And finally, this is to be our exchange featuring a specific technique.

With these specifics in mind, let's open a discussion for a few days on ideas for a theme.

1. Eileen Corder suggested some time ago the fun and creativity of using typography as the theme. As I understand it, she did not mean that to be "alphabet" but rather the elegant and interesting ways that letters and symbols are combined as compositional design elements. (Is that right, Eileen?)

2. Carol Lyons and Sharri LaPierre talked about an Illuminated Letters/symbols exchange, including gold (which is the illumination) metallic as part of the composition. The letters and symbols would not have to be limited to English language characters.

Are there other ideas out there now that these have had some time to gel? I apologize if I have missed any other suggestions that have been thrown out there. We'll keep the discussion open for the next week so get your ideas out there, place your votes with Exchange Managers. We'll let you know the results around Sept. 17th.

And now, technique. Last year there was much discussion on which techniques to feature. Moku Hanga and Reduction prints were among the techniques discussed.

One of the things we batted around was having a Moku Hanga only exchange once a year. Before we raise any cheers or protests, let me just say that personally, I am one of those western-oily-printmakers and I honestly haven't taken the time to learn the technique properly so would probably refrain from participating, but, I love the idea of making it a tradition in honor of our fearless and heroic founding father, Dave Bull, and those who enjoy working in the Moku Hanga technique, or are willing to learn this method of making beautiful art. Please speak up and let us get a general concensus on this approach for the technique exchange.

And just a note to Ex. 41 participants: we have had to wait once again for a few stragglers to get prints in. Hopefully your packages will be arriving shortly. Coordinator Joseph Taylor, can you give us an e.t.a. on the packages?

Happy Printing!!!

Hi All,

This was a really great video. Inspiring creativity. It seemed to me that Karen used a very flat, very hard plywood. Has anyone been to one of her workshops? Since I print on a press this was another way of thinking about multiple block. Very nice. Thank you!

A suggestion regarding #43:

Some people found both a theme and a technique too restricting last time. I
had honestly planned to have only a technique requirement for this exchange
but failed to communicate that to the new and improved exchange
coordinators.

So, I am suggesting:

Theme: none

Technique: reduction with at least 3 colors

We have some new papers, including those with sizing. Papers with sizing work best with water based inks.
If you'd like a sample, please e-mail susanc@graphicchemical.com. I'll be out of town for a while but will get them to you when I'm back.
