Hi,

I don't know much about exchange 43, but I'm the coordinator for exchange
42. I should have sent an email earlier introducing myself, but I was in the
process of moving to a new house, and things have been hectic -- I see that
my address is not updated on the exchange webpage, will see to that. The
theme of the exchange is open, though the paper size is a bit unusual as far
as Baren print exchanges go: it's Chu-tanzaku, 3x9". I'll probably send an
email soon with more instructions (though some are pretty intuitive: carve,
print, repeat last step at least 32 times). The page for the exchange is at:
http://www.barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_42/exchange_42.html .

Happy printing!

Excuse this slightly off-baren note (but it concerns a recent show).
Sue: I was going to suggest we get together for a cup of tea or
coffee, thinking you were right around the corner from Vermont. But
today I learned where you were from! Thanks for coming to the show!

Subject: Carving Text

CarvingStages

The text I'm carving is about the equivalent of 17 point Times Roman. I've worked out a three-stage carving process which you can see in the photo above. First I carve out all the "holes" -- the spaces in the letters o, d, g, etc. You can see this at the bottom of the photo. Then I use a very sharp straight knife, called a toh, to outline the letters (seen in the middle portion of the photo). And finally, I use the same knife plus a small u-gouge to clear away the wood around the letters, as at the top of the photo.

Naturally this is taking much longer than I expected, which I should have expected.
