There is a new tool available from Woodlke Matsumura (our mall supplier)
to aid in tying a new skin to your baren. Looks to me like a combination
of a velcro strip or some elastic band....very cleve use ! You can see
some video of the tool in action at the Baren blogsite with links to the
Japanese website page.

Hi all,

I'm experimenting with Akua Kolors and love them. I'm looking for a
nice, archival quality paper that will take these inks nicely. Plate-
like surface that will show the brush strokes of a monoprint. Thin
enough for easy rubbing, yet strong enough to take up to 5 layers of
ink. I thin-ness and surface of Masa, but know it's only good for
proofs. Any recommendations?

I use masa for some of my editions. It is acid free so I would be
interested to know why it is not suitable for printing editions. I
like this paper because its thin and prints crisp lines so I hope
there isn't anything too wrong with it.

Hi,

I really like it too. But was concerned with it's longevity. I had
read that it was good for student work and running proofs. I don't
know what it's made of or how archival it is in relation to other
papers. Just wanted to get some thoughts on it.

its made of sulphite pulp and is acid free. I have also read that it
is good for student work and proofs so I will be interested to see
what others have to say about it.

Masa is acid free and perfectly suitable for engravings with the smooth side
being very receptive of detail and thin layers of ink. It is cheap and to me
that means it doesn't have a lot of "character", but nevertheless there is
nothing "wrong" with Masa as a proofing and one/two color pure white
printmaking paper.
I personally print oily on the reverse side, the unsized side, as it has
more paper-sonality.

A better choice perhaps for multiple color works is Arches 88. This is a
beautiful thick and smooth Western style paper, unsized so if using it for
hanga work you will have to size it.
The king of papers IMHO in a pure white is Rives de Lin but only kings and
queens can afford it these days :-)

Other choices:

Printmaking to see some choices. Also, Graphic Chemical online, Daniel Smith
and Dick Blick put out yearly catalogs that are paper-teaching manuals in
themselves.

My printmaking teacher used to say "paper is a beautiful thing" and I
understood later the meaning of that after trying out a variety.

Thanks Maria! I agree that paper is beautiful.
I use Arches 88 frequently. It's become one of my favorite papers.
I'd like to experiment with some Japanese papers that are a lighter
than Arches.
