Mike, I think you are about on target. I googled yew and found
furniture and other things made of yew and some looks very much like
this block of wood. I believe I purchased it at a specialty wood shop
when in Portland a few years back. If my memory serves me the sales
person seemed to think it would make a nice wood for carving. Many of
the furniture pieces I saw had fiddle back in them, this small board
is straight grained and reddish in tone. Pine is very white in
comparison, but would be some what similar. Since it is relatively
soft, compared to say cherry. my husband said it reminded him of rose
wood. So far it seems to carve nicely, but a bit splintery. I guess
when I buy an unusual piece of wood I should label it. Thanks for the
input, at least I can tell folks I think this wood is yew.

Enjoy your day and keep making art.

Just another tale of woe re shipping via UPS and other than Postal Service...My sister decided to pass on to me a pastel painting which was an inherited item from our parents. She (living in California) decided to pass it on to me. She had Mail Boxes package it and they sent it UPS. I received it promptly and about a month later got a bill for the same amount (for brokerage) as she was charged by Mail Boxes. I thought it was just a mistake so ignored it and three months later a bill from a Collection agency with the usual threats. Yes I avoided much conflict and paid! As far as exchanges, I (in Canada) have had no problem receiving or sending prints, and definitely mark them printed matter.

Not a problem, Diane! THIS is the main 'place' always... The FaceBook
group is augmentation and free advertising for HERE!

One 'advantage' of the FaceBook group is the ability for EVERYONE to easily
upload photos, videos, links, etc - there are a couple of videos up there
already, plus some interesting side-discussions, links, photos, and so on...
It's pretty fun, actually!

Subject: I met some woodcutting relief printmakers today.....
Posted by: Georgina

Today I went to the Impress BBQ, I met some new artists and it was wonderful because they were relief printers. I encouraged them to join Baren and hopefully they will. I told them about the face book page (not that I am joining that!) They are both very talented and it was wonderful to talk about woodcutting and relief printing in general. It would be nice to form a little sub group of Impress for the relief printers!! There are many talented etchers in Impress and they are my friends but they are etchers afterall! It is so refreshing to talk about ones particular interest in printmaking! Which is obviously what Baren is about, but it is very exciting to talk face to face.......
