Le Green-Schubert
Thank you very much for your clear comments about inking the lino block. This inking and printing is a whole field of development for myself and I need to practise.

As for the flooring lino I'm experimenting with, my current blocks are in thin lino which is approx. 2.5 mm in thickness. It carves very well, although needs
to be flattened for printing (tends to curl a bit). It prints very well for white line carving. I am getting another piece, several blocks, to experiment with
the more usual approach -- carving and lowering the background and printing the lines. I wonder if it will work as well.

The thicker lino (4mm or 1/8") seems to have disappeared from the flooring trade, although it still is sold in art stores, Daniel Smith, etc.
The comparison of these 2.5mm surplus flooring rolls with the art store price of the 4mm makes this a worthwhile effort for me: the 4mm roll is
$21 per foot 3 ft wide, whereas the flooring (2.5mm) is 6 ft wide and some 75 - 100 ft long, for about $50. per roll. So the difference is $3000 to
$50 for approx the same size. I am using this myself as well as for printmaking classes for children and adults at the local art gallery. I hope the
black-line printing works as well as the white-line did.

I welcome other comments, and can let you know how my other carvings print next week.

I say NO to Facebook as well - Baren stands to gain nothing from
connecting with Facebook - it's too superficial, cluttered and a real
time waster if you have time you desire to waste!

Folks,
I would NOT participate in "Facebook". If some people are interested in that, I say GO FOR IT, it would have nothing to do with me.
However, let's keep the Baren group functioning as it is now, not to say without some evolvement and improvements as they arise.

My community phone lines were down for 5 hours or so today and I came back to the Baren group for 60+ emails !!
Nice to see/read all the interest from everyone! Thanks.
And no need to apologise, Dan.

Print on (thinly, I guess!)

Gaudalupe - quite simply a 'Passpartout' may be translated as a 'mat'
(not a doormat, of course) so for a catalogue entry you could say 'with
mat' or 'matted' to be clear BUT the original French term has become a
commonly used word word in English and is in general use for English
catalogues - there's really no need to translate it

Hello Baren Forum!!!
Sign-ups for Exchange 42 are officially open and will continue for four weeks! The link is here: http://www.barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_sign-up.html
We invite all [Baren] members to participate. (Those of you who are participating in Ex. 41 will have to wait for a week before being eligible to fill remaining spots.) Again, the theme for this exchange is OPEN (any subject/image you choose), and the paper size is a bit unique, based on a 1:3 ratio, 3" x 9" (7.62 x 22.86 cm). You may use vertical or horizontal orientation. I hope you are as excited as we are about this fun and unique size format!

***An additional note: We are in need of two or three more volunteers to help us complete Ex. 41. We've had some last minute drops, yet would still like to have a full compliment of 30 participants. Mary and I discussed it and we feel that we could offer an additional bonus to volunteers who step up at this late date by guarateeing them a spot in Ex. 42 if they can deliver their completed set of prints to the coordinator on or before August 1st. Please contact me off-list to secure the remaining spots for #41.

Thanks for your patience while we get any bugs worked out. ;0)

Your New Exchange Managers,
Kristine Alder and Mary Kuster

Both Dan & Louise are right. Here's a definition (#2) on the list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passepartout

Thanks for that Charles. I already have your site bookmarked. Indeed you are right about making a bottle jack press. I've made a large paper press, to be used when drying bulk amounts of handmade paper. A car Jack is the mechanism to apply pressure. Its finished height is 48". All bits purchased from the hardware store, I had the timber cut to size at the shop, then drilled the holes with a hand held drill. I picked up a couple of steel BBQ plates up from the roadside. They were being thrown away. I use these to even out the pressure when placed on either side of melamine sheets, between which are the sheets of paper. It did not take long to put together. It took longer to design the structure, and making sure it would be stable.
