I think this discussion goes back to the idea a few decades ago that
true "pure" art couldn't have any sort of narrative content, but had
to be about art itself - form, colour, composition, texture,
structure, line, materials, etc. To me, all those things are the
building blocks of art. Art is the way we express our humanity, in all
the myriad ways that we are human. Therefore there can't be any limits
on the subject matter or content of art or on the forms used to
express it. This also means that some forms can't be dismissed as
'craft' while others are elevated to 'art.'

It seems to me that good art is not about the subject but the creation
of something original. Good art can be a beautiful flower or a
political statement, if it is done well and original in content.

Mike, I wish I could see this work in person, wow.

Hi, Inkyfolk,

Perhaps some of you might be interested in this class in Chicago
(at the Center for the Book and Paper, Columbia)?! They offer
excellent classes!

Best wishes,
Sharen

Tom Killion
Japanese-Style Woodcut Printmaking on the Vandercook
Lecture: Friday, June, 26 6:30 pm
Open and free to the public

Workshop: Saturday & Sunday, June 27 & 28, 9–5
Limit 10 / 2 sessions / $200, includes materials

"Tom Killion will instruct students in his Japanese-style
woodcut printmaking techniques in a two-day workshop. The first
day Tom will introduce students to the Japanese key-block
technique for making multi-color block prints. He will discuss
the design and creation of effective images, the use and
maintenance of Japanese carving tools, the choice of block
materials, and Japanese handmade papers and traditional inking
techniques. The second day Tom will demonstrate his own modified
key-block technique using the Vandercook proof press and
oil-based inks. Students will have an opportunity to begin their
own woodcut projects, and receive basic instruction in carving
techniques."

It is with great sadness that I report that my brother Dale died last week,
ending a 16 year battle with cancer. Many of you have participated in print
exchanges with him, and he was an moderately active contributor to this
listserve. I loved him greatly and will miss him very much. The last block
he cut was the first of several intended for the year of the ox exchange. I
will be printing this one and sending it with my print, as soon as I can
bring myself to do it. I hope all of you others in the exchange will
continue sending your prints to his address, as his widow, Dianne, also a
skilled artist, has always derived great pleasure from the prints received
in exchanges. Rather than struggling to write more, I will put two urls
below of items about him in the Waterloo Iowa newspaper and one he had for
his prints, assuming you are not familiar with them.

I hope to continue working on my own prints, participating in exchanges (he
introduced me to Baren) and write on more cheerful topics in the future.

I was so sorry to hear of Dale's passing. I remember the e-mail
interchanges that we will miss. He is in my heart.

I wish to extend my condolences on the passing of your brother and your friend. I hope that you and your family will be able to move forward with strong, joyful memories of Dale, his life and his art, and that the pain of his absences be quickly overcome by those happy memories.

My Best Regards, Eli
