Hi Maria, since Spring is finally here (most meaningful for those of
us in northern climes) and since there seems to have been a huge
awakening to environmental concerns we could have a theme based on
"The colour green". All you Yankees, of course, could work on "The
color green":-)

Green can represent a plethora of concepts from birth and rebirth
thru to wealth or the lack thereof or it can be something as simple
as a blade of grass or a field of hay. Although, and I quote Kermit
the Frog, "It's not that easy being green", it should be easy enough
doing green.

Topic: Sometimes very simple yields great results. How about: Leaf.

Did I miss the sign-up link? I can't find it on the Baren site...

Regarding themes, I'd like to see something 'landscape-ish', given the dimensions.

Exchange #41
Paper size Oban, about 15 x 10 inches (38 x 25.5 cm)

Interesting suggestions the last 24 hours; some of them could combine easily
or an idea may fit into two of these (My Window/My Studio, e.g.)
In any case, I think that's enough themes to vote on; thank you Gayle for
reminding me of Andrew's suggestion.

Themes suggested so far:

1-Questions and Answers
2-My Window (view from, as I see it)
2-Abstract
1-My Studio
1-Marks, Signature, Imprint
1-Green
1-Leaf

Sign up delayed to April 9th, one week from today.

Now let's get some votes!

IMO the powdered pigments give you good strong colors for woodblock and a
little bit of powder goes a long way. There is preparation time involved
and you must be ready to mix your secondary colors from a basic palette.
Here are some links that explain the basics of preparing powder pigments
for ready-use and other printing considerations:

Of course as Dave Bull would always tell me the idea is not to just read
the info but to get going and do some printing..lots of it...and to
practice, practice, practice....

There are substitute materials and tools that you can get going with until
you purchase better tools....some people use spoons or wooden doorknobs as
makeshift barens...or watercolor paint as substitute for pigments and
woodblock inks....Rives White Heavy (175gms (not BFK) is a good beginner
paper if you are waiting to upgrade to handmade Japanese hosho.

Some printmakers use the Japanese powdered pigments and others use
commercially ready water-based printmaking inks or color
dispersions....for a link of suppliers like Graphic Chemical and Guerra
Paint you can check out the Suppliers list on Baren:

hope the links are helpful......Julio

Dear Julio

thank you for that

I am currently working my way through this, and also other info sent to me. The thing I am noticing and you will all laugh is how fiddly this seems compared to putting a nice blob of oil based ink and rolling up! However I have seen some prints that make me realise that the fiddle can lift prints into a whole other realm that I could not imagine acheiving with my current skills.
