Wow! It is so FINE to read all of those posts.
Thank you for the commentaries on finance transparency for starters. I think
that whatever an artist chooses to do in that area is just fine. It isn't like
giving out your social security and bank account numbers. And in this case,
it's not a competition on who earns more. We all could remember that some great
art was not purchased at all during the artist's life time. There certainly
are plenty of cases, including Van Gogh. Rather, this sharing is an educational
tool that benefits so many in the field as well as outside.
It seems that most people in other fields have absolutely no idea of the
sacrifices that artists find routine, ranging from costs and pay, to time and
product. Never mind aesthetics. Perhaps one of the glories of artists, that
generosity of spirit and acceptance of a wide variety of circumstances, is but
part of the picture needed for outsiders to gain understanding. Augumenting this
generosity with information about the realities of the career is a community
gift.
Regarding the gift of Art by showing your work... Thinking of how Art has
been taught in USA lower level schools, there's a lack of culture, an often poor
choice of tools in the tradition (crayons being particularily difficult), etc.
Then there's the lumping of "Art Education" into one word when there are
two categories. That of the history of art and the production of art. A few
univ. courses made me understand that many less educated citizens attitudes
against education and Art were/are due to the tradition of rejecting European rule.
I hail from Ohio, where not only the youth find Art useless. That's changing
but is still very pervasive. Bigotry is taught at home, whatever the brand
name. Many teachers have fought the tide and done wonders. Education has VASTLY
improved since my day in school. Hooray!
I'd like to hear about other printmaker's thoughts on this one. Why do you
think so many are prejudiced against loving Art?
I know that each one of you is working to change this... with many success
stories too.
Exchange #40 is getting me going! I was an administrator for a sizeable int'l
printmaking group... ran dry of printmaking joy. All your postings, friends,
are stimulating, informative and so very welcome. Many topics are such a
delightful surprise too!

This is a very great group, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Benny,
I love the quotes at the end of your posts.
