Hello,
Sorry I did not get back as quick as I originally intended...I am changing jobs in less than two weeks so there is a lot to do!
My vision for the swap shop is very similar to yours, Eileen. A one-for-one, no restriction, no waiting trade would be
a nice alternative to the more specific regulated edition. I do feel that we should maintain the original idea as a sort
of starting point for people who either miss an exchange or want to "get their feet wet" with a mini-exchange. Because I
am moving and having to squat on sofas for a while I do not know if I can take any of the reigns for the Swap Shop.
(Depends on whose sofa I end up on!) I wouldn't be opposed to running the one-for-one. Since it is just one-for-one,
and no print goes into an archive, I think there should be a digital archive on the Baren site for these one time swaps.
But, if a participant is opposed to the digital archive there could be an "opt out" option for that part of the swap. I suppose
we could have a trial run and see if it catches on...

Lana,
Congratulations on your baren wrapping! It is indeed a challenge, but
you know what? I figure if I can do it anyone can, since the Arthur
Ritis is of no help whatsoever. However, I wanted to warn you that I
was so proud of myself when I wrapped the first one perfectly, and it
has been downhill ever since. I have yet to do one as perfectly as I
did the first one, which was, naturally, one of the cheaper bamboo
sheaths. Once I got to the more expensive leaves I blew them right
and left. sigh. Hopefully, that will not be your experience. Your
hands are much more cooperative than mine are, and now we know
Graham's secret of the magical clamp! ;-)
Cheers ~

Hi All,
I love the idea of the swap shop and I had an idea that may or may not
be feasible, we all may need to toss this around and see. What about,
(I'm not a wordsmith, so I'm sure someone else can come up with a good
name,) a sort of tag or pass-along exchage, Someone could start with
five prints and mail it to the first person who is ready to exchange
some prints and they will add one or two of theirs and send it to the
next person (who is on the 'I am ready to exchange list'), they in turn
can add their own and take their choice from the five. Sort of like
playing gin or rummy. Anyway, there will need to be some structure to
this idea, or minimum rules, like you cannot keep the travelling
portfolio more than one month or such. Will this work?? I leave it to
your creative minds.

Eileen,
I'd be interested in a new Swap Shop. Think it's good to have a paper size specified .... the one time
I participated the prints varied from 6x8 on up to 11x15 .....

Back from the desert, ahhhhh....sigh, the real world is so noisy.
Exchange #38 should be in the mail this week, like “ahorita”!!!
Seriously, get that puppy printed and mailed out to Benny. Also, please let
her and me know at coordinator38@barenforum.org as soon as you know when you
will mail so she expects your prints.
Don’t forget to fill out the print information form for the colophon and
remember the coordinator just cuts and pastes so send it exactly how you
want it printed.
And finally, don't forget to (optionally) order your beautiful cases from
the Baren Mall to safe-keep your precious collections.

Exchange #39 sign-up will be closing November 1st, not a day too soon as I
am starting to get spammed on the sign-up address. Please note the roster as
there has been one drop and one addition already.

Sorry for the intrusion but this is a great way to reach many of you.

I'm killing my current address in about two weeks due to overwhelming
amounts of garbage.

I like Renee's Swap Shop idea, but in trying to figure it out I come up with
this. If each person wanted 5 different prints in exchange for their 5
editioned prints then there would have to be more than just 5 prints in the
pass around package.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you'd have to start out with 5
editioned prints from 5 (or more) different people, 25 (or more) in all.
Then when you get it, you would take one of each that you liked, add 5 of
your prints, and mail it to the next person on the list.
I think it would work better if there were more than 5 choices, say 7
different prints, 35 in all. Then you'd have to make a choice!
The problems would come in with keeping the prints clean and nice. I would
suggest everyone put the prints individually into 'clearbags' along with
their colophon.
The negatives to this would be the size of the package to be mailed. I'm
not too sure that 25 to 35 prints under 8"x10" would even fit into a US
Priority Flat Rate Envelope without problems. If we could get the package
into a Flat Rate Envelope, that would probably be the most economical way to
mail them, and have them get there in a timely manner. [That's probably
the most economic method for international also]
What do you all think?

That is a temporary fix Maria....
Have you talked to the people at gmail..... they may be able to help
you with filters.
I use to get 75 to 100+ a day and took my grievance to Shaw....
Down to lest than a dozen a day....

Gmail don't have no spam!
My current growing problem is that my maria@mariarango.com address has been
active for soooo long and used to be posted on my website. CD's with
10000000s of email addresses are being sold everywhere, most notably where I
get most of my spam: China, various countries in Europe, and (sigh) Canada.
Not that the spammers actually "live" there but the host computers being
hijacked to send gazillions of spam messages live there.
I have Spam Assassin on my Pair Networks account and if I crank the filters
up any tighter I lose all kinds of legitimate email, such as Baren's email,
since it comes from a "third party", i.e., not the sender of the email but
the list server.
Anyhow, it's been due for a change. It has taken about 15 years to get to
where I'm annoyed by it and I don't plan on publishing my new address(es) on
the website; lesson learned. I also give fake addresses to stupid websites
that require sign ins, like nomail@mariarango.com so I don't get hit with a
bunch of advertising emails. I get around 500-600 spam messages a day, and
although they all go directly to my Deleted Items folder, it's still a lot
of volume.
So far all the email in my new addresses is clean as a whistle. The web used
to be a much nicer place.
Thanks for the advice,
Maria
Um, I have remained with aol for years now. In fact, a variation of this name
was my original email addy. AOL has the antispam down to a fine art. I don't
block my email, my spam filter is set at middling and I get maybe one a day.
AOL really got their act together. I get all the listserves' emails that I
wish.
Like you, Maria, I give a fako email addy. I also allow no cookies except
by directly saying "yes".
Anyways, hope that all goes well with you. Good luck!
