I wish I could jump into the current Moku Hanga exchange, it's the method I
use; but I'm having a very busy year with work and new family commitments. I
can't wait to see the results when they're posted in the gallery.

Can I second (or third) a little whoop of excitement at the possible thought
of another "Lefties can Carve" mini/sub exchange.

Count me in if it ever happens. Chuban or smaller size would be nice.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have a favourite part of the production
process when making a print?

I only ask because I really enjoy the carving/cutting of the woodblocks
(although clearing large areas is a little dull) but find the printing stage
a little scary.

If we were transported back to Japan in the 1830's, I'd either be drawing
the designs to be cut, or working as a blockcutter's apprentice.

Cheers everyone,

Mark.

What is this Lefties can Carve exchange you speak of?

Sounds like you need a bigger chisel:

Clearing shouldn't take more than a few minutes ... :-)

Greetings to you all,

I'm still just about on target with my New Year's resolution to produce a
small edition of prints per week for a year. It seemed a great idea in
January, but it is now restricting my landscape paintings after a summer
in Ost Holstein. However, with only 11 weeks to Christmas I might as well
continue and with a ruthless sorting at the end of the year should have
several prints suitable for exhibition. The prints are transcriptions of
direct sketches from quirky pre- history artifacts in Danish and German
museums. They may be of interest to you.

Latest prints on my website:

For smaller areas the shoe polish _applicator_ brush works for me.
They seem to have more bristles than the rectangular ones.
I cut off the horizontal handle and glue it back on vertically.
I then work it over with my belt sander to point the bristles.

And, I feel quite at home with moku hanga for Exchange #39.
That's what I do. Now for the next exchanges I may have to learn/buy
something new.

Eileen, I'm not sure if this was clear from my other posts, but this is not
my first attempt at hanga, I have done hanga off and on for 11yrs. My
comment re the one block was purely aesthetic - some images call for simplicity and
no color.

sorry for the second post but I clicked on the send button by mistake before
I was done! at any rate, I wanted to say that regardless of what my
personal opinions have been on this, as I said before, I'm happy to follow the rules
that have been set for the exchange, and, as always, look forward to seeing
everyone's prints and personal take on the theme.

happy printing!

Here is my preferences....
CREATE-Cut-Print

Printing is such a bore.
It is the creation of the image that is the fun part of the fun....
all else is truly a craft.

Colour me in trouble.....

A small size router does a great job....
So does a power chisel.... These are excellent and not terribly
expensive.

I have been training a nest of carpenter ants for several years...
Progress is slow. They seem to prefer the walls of my studio
or my lumber supply in the shed.

Without relating to the current exchange and it's
requirements, I think that since ANY woodcut or
engraving can qualify as Moku hanga you are not wrong
to call them that, no more than you would be wrong to
use the French or German or Chinese language to say
"woodcut" or "wood engraving".

However, to be more accurate and factual, the correct
Japanese term for these works is "Sosaku hanga."

Davids' explanation of the various Japanese woodcut
terms was pretty clear and it seems that when most
Baren members speak of Moku hanga, they are referring
to a work done 'after the style of' "Dento teki
hanga".

I hope this helps.

Nancy, that's very strange, are you using this sign up form?
http://www.barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_sign-up.html

Once you click submit, are you getting this webpage right after?

--------
Your application for Exchange participation has been received.

The list of participants will be updated soon,
or you can wait for announcements to be made on [Baren]

Thank you!
-------

I haven't received your sign up at all, sorry. I will ask Dave if there have
been any weird bounces or errors lately from one of the forms.
All I can do right now is add you at the bottom of the list until I figure
out what happened to your sign-up. There are only three wait-listers so it
is VERY likely that you will get to participate anyway.

Mark opined:

I enjoy the designing process, but my favorite has to be the carving. It's both compulsive and zen-like (if that is possible). I never plan the image completely, so a lot of creative choices are left to senendipity and boo-boos become design elements. ;-j

The printing is workmanlike for me -- I want to master the task, but it often masters me. I'm a WIP. ;->
