No apology necessary ... it was fun to sit and talk with you! Thank
_you_ for coming out all that long way on the train.

But neither of us remembered to take any pictures! Maybe next time ...

Hi Barbara,

If you decide on LeeValley be sure to purchase from them from the USA
site....

Do your home work when shopping at LeeValley....
They are $expensive$. The have a reputation here in Canada,
where they originated, as being highest quality ... but expensive.

Sometimes the price is beyond the quality factor.
Look at the prices of the exact same knives .....

http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&p=31090&cat=1,130,43332,43393
$21.50 can 20.50 usa.

$15.75

Subject: [Baren 37124] kento adjustments/printing blues
Send Message: To this poster

I asked a variant of this question and received, and tried out most of the
responses. One I didn't receive or see in the archives is how to adjust your
carved kento just a little bit, say 1-2mm towards the part you cut out? I
usually cut kentos on each block and if one needs to be adjusted I can just
eyeball it and drop the paper a hair off--and that works well unless I have to drop
it again to darken the color.....since I'm working with just the paper
thickness carved out what do I slip in to keep the paper off? I thought of using a
metal brad like the one they use for framing/matting to hold the mat
down..slipped in and hammered down to be flush with the surface?
Thanks, Andrew
P.S.
This Moku Hanga printing process is really hard! I still seem to have a
reject rate of 50% especially if I'm using good paper! Usually a pale area that
prints too lightly (board too dry?) or if I push harder, an ink blotch on my
last drop or around the edges and always just enough that I can't use them
(unless I cut it out and paste it on a new sheet). I am using a Murusaki baren
medium and it still feels (after 3-4 small editions) like I'm printing with
the side of a pine cone (compared to my inexpensive plastic baren). Does it
get easier.....Will I get better? Should I look seriously at brayers.......

You need to insert a shim (called 'kuiki' in Japanese).

Cut a slip of hardwood in a shape something like this:
http://woodblock.com/temporary/kuiki_02.jpg

Use your 'kento-nomi' (chisel for cutting registration marks), or other
flat chisel, and stab it into the wood to make a little gash in the
proper place.

Tap in the kuiki, slice it off with the chisel, and then dress the top
neatly:
http://woodblock.com/temporary/kuiki_01.jpg

Run a test print, and trim the thing as necessary.

In that last photo, you can see where the registration has been pushed
_towards_ the paper in one direction, and the corner trimmed off to
pull it _away_ from the paper in the other direction. After a lengthy
edition, printed in time of changing weather, the registration corners
can become a forest of little shims ...

Print it twice ... ??

If it's too 'hard', then use a sheet of thin backing paper ... (bakery
wax paper, etc.) to try and 'tone it down' a little ...

Re: my visit to Japan ..... Continued.

I did forget to mention that I also visited WoodLike Matsumura and was
very impressed with their Service to a "foreigner" in getting one of
the staff to speak English even though I could easily point to the
brushes I wanted!, but also their supplies Barbara, there they had more
than I wanted in all forms , thank you. I had no trouble in finding
the store like "lumbar yard" with the help of numerous people and a
lady who was heading that way home and when I mentioned the Tokyo
Olympic Flags still flying and Michelle going to Barcelona, she said
she has a sister who teaches gymnastics to younger children so the
walk in fact was much shorter than I realised!

The brushes they honed for me too so was very pleased to get that done
on the spot, too.

If you are visiting WoodLike Matsumura it is a cash only store there so
take enough Yen to purchase what you require.

But I was impressed with their service ........ it could be because I
already get my wood sent to Australia from there or I did a little name
"dropping", but they pointed to a parcel waiting for a Baren Member the
gentleman said.

I am pleased I made the effort to visit.

Cheers,

Jan
