Lester Dore here. I've been productively lurking for some time now.
I've seen many prints by Mexican printmakers, particularly Leopoldo
Mendez, where engraving tools were used on linoleum to excellent
effect. I remember reading somewhere that they deliberately hardened
the linoleum by chilling it. I've not done a print this way myself,
but have tested cutting on some very old battleship linoleum I bought
years ago from a company that sold flooring--it was probably the last
of their stock. It seemed like it would work just fine. I've also had
limited success using a multiple line graver for accents on wood as
soft as basswood.

Graham,
Congrats on winning the fight re/ entry fees. Many write, but few get
responses, let alone positive ones. You must be one of the chosen
few ;-)

To tell you the truth Sharri.... I am as surprised as anyone.

It's always a tug of war to get what is fair and deserving for the arts
community.
CARFAC is an organization here in Canada, which I am heavily involved
with, that has done wonders for the fee structure and fair
representation of artists.

If you are curious about us.... two sites to view....
www.carcc.ca/fee_schedules.html
and ours which I mistakenly took on a few years ago.. (I jest)....

Once again Canada is far far better than the USA! The site that Graham gave
us links to is impressive and I'm jealous that we lower places don't have
anything much like it beyond Artists Equity. Thanks for the work you've done with
the group, an inspiration to us all.

I'd like to know what members think of the "Orphan" art works bill down here
in the USA.

It is my understanding that all Art works will be declared up for grabs if
not registered with an official, fee'd service yet to be set up. This eliminates
any other protections that we artists (in any field of the Arts) have
enjoyed. What do you think on all this, Graham?

Take care here, folks, and be careful of what you ask for, it all has to
be paid for from somewhere.
We are now crossing the line into the politics of two countries,
capitalism and socialism.

Orphan art works act does not do that. If it passes it will make it easier
for orphaned works to pass into the public domain.

US law for copyrights is NOT being infringed upon at all. This has to do
with ORPHAN art works, those that are not associated with a particular
artist or for which the artist or otherwise copyright holder is no longer
available, unknown, and not obviously identifiable. Would affect art works
without signatures, art works without copyright, art works that are just
uploaded to the web without ANY identifying authorship.

Say for example, a simple Google search for "Maria Arango" does not yield
any way to contact this obscure artist, then Maria Arango's art works would
pass into the public domain. Say someone appropriates an original Maria
Arango artwork and claims that due to the proposed Orphan Art Works Act
(keep in mind this has not been made into any law as of yet) is declared an
"orphan" work, Maria Arango finds out and can claim ownership by simply
pointing out that the art work is signed and Maria Arango is alive and well
and easily contacted for permissions, etc, through her website.

Registering copyrights for your art works is still the best "legal"
protection but not necessary. As soon as your signature goes on the art
work, it is copyrighted. That law is still a law and will not be repealed.
Artists everywhere are panicking and there is no need. Again, registering
art works is a good idea but not necessary under current copyright law,
which is not on the "docket" to be repealed.

Also, there are "for a fee" private registration services popping up
everywhere and taking advantage of this mass panic. Go to the official
government website, and register a bunch of your works together as a body of
work for not much bucks. Read read read read read read read.stay informed,
do not panic.

Thanks for postinf this clarification... You saved me hour of research
etc....

As for the copyright of works.... the law in Canada is the same. Sign
it and it is protected.
No need to spend time and money doing anything else.

We have another feature re CARFAC that some may not have triggered on
to.

When a public gallery agrees to an exhibition they pay the artist for
the use of the work.
I have had several occasions where the gallery claims they don’t know
about this and I
quickly forward the information re CARFAC ....
Very often they cough up the bucks as per the fee schedule.

When I get written acceptance of an exhibition and the gallery refuses
to pay the fee, I
decline the offer. However my CV reads....”Accepted for exhibition by
(gallery whoever)
Works for me.

When they won’t pay the fee, artists (need to be a member) report the
situation to our
National office in Ottawa.... they get involved and.....
...... well that is another subject for another day.

Just so you know.....

Canada is not a socialist democracy.... It is conservative.
The NDP would have to be in power to make it a somewhat socialist
society.

This being said in the assumption that anywhere less capitalist than the USA
is a socialist nation. Which is, not to put too fine a point on it, complete
nonsense.
