Maria, you and I must have been sending psychic messages through air
and space. After I wrote all those possibilities I thought hmmm those
are TECHNIQUE changes. Why did I not suggest we have an annual
exchange that put forth a technique?? I wanted to, but meetings, and
a lot of things kept me from sending out a third, yes third email in
one day. No need our amazing coordinator reached out in wisdom and
grasped the concept. Wonderful, it will indeed stimulate our creative
adventures on this earth and we will each bring in something new to
our work.

When I joined this forum not only had I never carved a wood block I
had never done hanga. I joined with a purpose, to learn. Now I carve
in wood and I do at times attempt hanga. I am far from the best doing
this wonderful technique, but it has enriched my art and given me one
more option in my creative hat box. Some of the techniques I listed I
have not tried, but would like to. An exchange that pushes me to try
something new will only make me better as an artist, extending the
horizons.

Maria may not have pleased us with her changes, but she has listened.
(and she pushed our buttons and got us talking and oh my goodness
THINKING) That makes her a good leader. I do not find a good
discussion or a thoughtful suggestion for change divisive. A good
discussion has always made this forum a good place with much
intellectual give and take. Throwing out ideas, sharing knowledge and
caring for one another has always been top drawer. Special people who
give so much help to keep this group in top artistic shape get my
applause.

I am so glad Maria was rescued, we need her robust energy.

Paper. I hope I can get some good stuff before we head south as you
want us to use the japanese stuff. Could you clarify a little, so I
get the right thing? Is this one specific Japanese paper or are there
several that would qualify and if so where can I get them? Some times
the Baren mall is slow (not a criticism). I will probably fly south
in about 6 weeks, yikes, to a place where I cannot get Japanese
paper! I can put some in my suitcase, no ban on that, that I know
of!!! This time I want to spring the bucks for a nice paper and gads
hope I get into the exchange.

I spent a fair amount of time looking through your sites....
I found it very enjoyable and most informative.

Your work is very interesting and stimulated me to get
back to the studio. I have been doing big and little iron
sculptures recently. As I tell all my friend... I am presently
pumping iron !!!!!

The little press you made was quite ingenious.
Might have to make one of those ! .... I will probably
build a sturdy table as the days of working on the floor
are gone for me. Since I have welding equipment I
can vision the engineering of your principle design using metal.

Keep up the good work....

Regards
Graham

Aqua! That site was totally wonderful to see! Thanks for sending it. I've
seen the prints in Japanese locations, but never appreciated them anywhere enough
until seeing that site.

I recommend everyone exploring Aqua's post.

Washi is Japanese paper, not a specific kind.
Any of a number of suitable Japanese papers can be had from the Baren Mall:

McClain's:

Daniel Smith:

Graphic Chemical and Ink:

There are a number of papermakers out there as well, Japanese Paper Place
comes to mind.

Send Message: To this poster

Well the saga has finally played out and the ending is indeed not happy but one that must be confronted.
After nearly a month, tons of stress and many many hours the source of the leach was completely confirmed today.

I though I had a handle on it many times but I was wrong. This is tuff to figure out without the ability to show
another person whats going on.

I suspected the veggie oil soaked block, but after trying the cat litter suggestion and sealing the edges and
some carved areas with shellac the leech was still happening. But the litter did absorb the veggie oil fairly well.
So thanks for the tip whoever mentioned it.

Then I suspected the miracle gel medium. But it was not the miracle gel. THE REAL SOURCE OF THE LEACH WAS THE SETSWELL MEDIUM.

Unfortunately this realization comes too late to save the 14 grayling prints I have pulled so far. They are complete
losses along with all of the time I put in printing and material wise. So now I have no choice but to start over from
scratch. This means more time and significant capital for a artist low on the latter. But such is life and such is printmaking.

What really makes me mad is that I noticed a yellowing of the setswell medium towards the center of the can while the edges
remained a normal pasty off white. I completely ignored this and used the setswell anyway.
so a bad can of setswell led to this whole mess.

A simple test performed today confirmed without any doubt the bad can of setswell. My complicated test session with small
prints and precise mixture ratios was too carefull and far too time consuming. A simple 50/50 mixture of ink and medium drawn
out on a few scraps of paper did today what a full day could not do then.

I called Daniel smith and they told me the shelf life of miracle gel is about 5 years. My can is about 2 years old.

I called handschy industries to ask about setswell but people kept transfering me to another person and I eventually
ended up on some guys voice mail who never called me back. Needless to say I am not impressed with their product or
service at the moment. That can of setswell was only two years old and cost me hundreds of dollars.

I should have figured this out sooner thats what makes me mad. The only good thing to come out of this is that I could
print a 5ft woodblock in my sleep.

so if you are a oily peep and use setswell check your product every time you use it, it should be a pasty off white and
not look yellowed or have clear oils oozing about. lesson learned.

Jason, thanks for posting this and alerting us to the
potential damage this product can cause.

I know it must be heart wrenching to have put so much
work into a great print like your Grayling, not to
mention an artists' limited funds, only to be let down
by such an seemingly innocuous product.

Other than oils and perhaps cobalt dryer, I tend to
think of my inks and additives as having an indefinite
shelf life if stored away from heat and air and
expiration dates are not something I often think to
look for. Having your product fail while still 'good'
is especially disturbing and though I use mainly
Graphic Chemistry, I will be extra vigilant in the
future about any additives I mix into my inks. I also
think I may reconsider cleaning-up my blocks with
veggie oils, like the old olive oil I have been using.

I don't suppose you can salvage something from all
this by converting your block into work of art on its
own?

Cheers

Thanks for sharing this Jason. Sorry for all your troubles!

Very informative to know. I seldom use Set-swell. I had used in the past to
allow the ink to remain open and accept additional layers without getting
glossy. Then I kind of liked the gloss and quit using it. I have a 9 year
old can but out here (Vegas) things dry up before they separate.
