Dear Friends.

Please start posting again. I miss your thoughts, commentaries and
information. I apologize if this is in any way my fault.

It was exciting to see how everyone thinks about safety in the studio... the
variety of concerns and solutions. I learned a lot about loose pigments beyond
what Mayer has said. Baren rocks.

What do you do when you've said everything that you want for a series? How do
you change directions? I have my own methods that have worked for me over the
years and wondering what others do.

My Mother, a serious and accomplished artist, would change the medium she
worked in. The stimulus was effective as each informed the next. Synergy was
especially noticable towards the end of her working art career to great effect.
She is no longer available but the topic continues to interest. There must be a
gazillion ways for the one. What's yours?

Bestus.

Lately, I've been playing with making small, Japanese
type cashiers, booklets, etc, and I've wondered about
making a small edition printed with woodcuts.

Having never done an artist book before I am curious
whom here has done this and can they show some
examples of their own work?

I seem to have a zillion ideas in my head, but getting them organized...not so easy. Books seem to work for me,
I have a lot and just start looking through them...one I dismissed before will suddenly get me excited and as soon
as I go in the studio with a jumping off spot things just happen.

Organizing for an exhibit is harder. I wanted to bring more color into my work a while ago and spent months making stuff
I hated. Then, suddenly I decided on a premise for the imagery and it just happened. So I think a theme is the most important
if you want to do a body of work. It forces your work to look connected and as you develop it you can see your idea take shape
and become more than you envisioned at the beginning.
My best to all

I haven't done a lot of 'series', but I usually set a goal of so-many pieces. I've found I usually tire and want to move on to something else before I hit my target number.
I have had to force myself to complete the series.
So generally I'm already thinking about what I want to do next!

Hi All,

This is a great question. I sometimes look at the work of my favourite
artists; like Barbara, books are a really good jumping off spot.
Sometimes I've made a mistake -- or was it -- once I thought I had
picked up another black watersoluable pencil for a black and white
drawing that I was working on and instead it was blue, a beautiful
blue, and with the black and white it seemed to be just the thing that
the drawing needed. I still would like to do a series on that idea, or
maybe based on a particular response to a particular color. I also
like the idea of your Mom's by changing mediums, with printmaking there
are certainly many ways of working, maybe just change one thing, like
making a reductive, or adding color with chine colle, or white line on
mostly black prints or ... keep inspired! Sometimes a small idea can
become a major adventure.

yeah that's me. i gotta have a theme. for a few years it was just coffee cups. then i did a body of work
that involved cups with people drinking from them, and eventually will include people just holding them.
right now i'm just working on a few portraits.
usually something has to happen around me or to me so that i can come up with a theme. like the mustaches
for miracles and now my gallery's one year anniversary. studio loud, and then the prints that i'm coming up with...
