Hi Lynn,

If you don't have enough border for stapling, you can
screw a pair of strips of wood the thickness of your
block (before carving) and staple or carve new kentos
on these. If you need to you can also tack these to
your work bench or a piece of plywood and use some
scrap to 'frame' in the block so it can be lifted in
and out for inking, etc.

Good luck and Cheers,
Eli

I have always been curious:
I know what etching is;
I know what lithography is;
I know what screen printing is;
I know what woodblock and lino-block is;

But what would you call it when you ADD to the wood or lino and print
the surface?
Is it still called relief printing?
Or inking up and printing a manhole cover? Relief?

I would think that it falls in the category of mixed media or collagraph.

I'd still call it relief printing. However you got there, you've arrived at a
surface in which the bits that stand proud receive ink and so print, and the
missing bits don't print. That's relief printing by a different route...

Relief printmaking is traditionally considered to include rubbings,
woodblock, woodcut, linoleum, collagraphs, stamping, and really anything
that involves leaving in relief the surface to be printed.

Under the umbrella of relief printmaking, you also have direct and indirect
printing.

Adding to a plate and printing the result would probably be called a
collagraph, a collection of objects added to a plate and printed in relief.

Printing manhole covers would be included if you print them as you proposed,
in the direct method. That is, inking up the manhole cover, laying paper
over it and applying pressure.

You can also print manhole covers (and woodcut plates and collagraph plates
and anything, really) with the rubbing technique, an ancient art going back
to prehistory. In rubbings, an indirect method, you lay the paper over the
object to be printed and apply pigment directly on the paper which remains
on the elevated or relief parts of the plate.

Did I help or hurt?

Just an add on for the lino etch discussion - it is a popular method here for creating an interesting surface effect for relief and also for embossing. I really like this article whcih describes the method very well and the addition of the wallpaper glue keeps it basically where you want it.

Nasty chemicals though - keep safe!

Yes, a manhole cover is relief but found object for sure.
A true built up surface no matter what the substrate is a collograph plate. It can be printed relief or intaglio, sometimes a combination of both.
Not so off topic

"The Arranged Flower: Ikebana and Flora in Japanese Prints",
featuring more than 30 prints by some of Japan's favorite
designers, closes August 3.

"Americans through Japanese Eyes"

"Opening August 9, the exhibition Yokohama-e: 19th-Century
Prints of Americans in Japan presents a rarely seen portion of
our Japanese print collection, revealing a unique perspective on
Americans abroad. Included among the nearly 30 prints on view
are portraits of Commodore Perry and his ships, pictures of
Americans at the port of Yokohama, and fanciful depictions of
American cities that emerged from the imaginations of Japanese
artists. Many of the selections are from the extensive
Yokohama-e (Pictures of Yokohama) collection of Emily Crane
Chadbourne, given to the museum in 1926. "

There is also a remarkable exhibit with accompanying concerts
and activities, "Benin, Kings and Rituals"

Block Museum, Northwestern Campus, features "Design in the Age
of Darwin" (including Morris)

Block Museum houses a wonderful collection of prints, and is a
gem on the lakefront in Evanston.
