I could be way off base with this interpretation. I looked at the
Kathe Kollwitz print and I think it might be that she left the wood in
a rough state. I have done this and you get a gradation where the
wood is rough, not exactly like the grain showing. It looks like an
oil based print. Like I said I could be wrong it might be some sort
of hatching marks.

Me gusto Mexico tambien. Y yo estudio espanol en la escuela para
quartro anos, muchos anos pasado. Buenos dias.

Tibi,

If you carve with your chisel in a shallow manner, the sluffed off portions will print up like that.

Looks like the same tool (going by the photos, anyway) - both made by
the Shimizu Hamono company.

I don't know about SHARP, but yes, it should be 'sharp', and ready to
use.

Actually, they'll probably end up being just about exactly the same
price, once you factor in the shipping from Japan on the Mall tool ...

Hi Tiberu. You asked about how to achieve the sort of grey-ish
"dirty" texture, like Kathe Kollwitz's "Sacrifice" print. I haven't
tried it, but I believe it's done by making very shallow and beveled
cuts rather than sharp cuts in the areas where you want the edges to
be indistinct and "dirty". The sample videos by Keiji Shinohara show
something like what I mean. Go to:

http://learningobjects_devel.wesleyan.edu/blockprinting/

In the menu look for "Special Techniques" and under that find "Wood
Gradation".

I've also read that if you're printing by hand you can lightly push
the paper down into the shallow cut areas to get this effect.

Good luck!

Tiberiu, I have gotten similar effects by using a
bull-nose chisel, an Aisuki, to shallowly carve an
area, rather than a regular gouge, knife or parting
tool. Instead of a sharply defined line, these tools
can give a fading appearance to the carved area, which
can also vary when hand printed, depending on how much
pressure is used over the area with the burnishing
tool.

Hello Tibi,
Just another suggestion for the effect on the print you linked too - I was wondering if it could have been wiped back in the areas that are lighter? The stomach and thighs do seem to have a slightly different density of ink.

i wonder if it wasn't something even simpler. i get that 'effect' when i have a warped block. whenever there's a rough or uneven spot, low bits and what not, i get that. i won't even notice it until i ink it up and press it.
