"I don't know if i'm the problem or if i got a bad one or what but
some of the ball bearings get stuck and leave dark circles in my prints."
Not your problem Viza: You shouldn't have problems like that with a brand
new baren. I have a ball bearing baren that I bought from McClain's and it
has been a dream. Email Barbara Mason, I believe she's the one who
moderates the mall at Baren. I've used my ball bearing baren right on the
back of the print and had no problems with marking (though the instructions
recommend using a backing sheet). Keep in mind that you don't need to
press on this baren; the weight of your hand is sufficient. my
instructions said that if you put too much pressure on the baren then the
ball bearings may stick.
Hope you get this problem resolved because the ball bearing baren can be a
dream, I wish I'd made the investment years ago, I don't get tired near as
fast since I've been using it!

Yes, yes, yes...
harlequins, a Picasso thing!
Another thing that works well for a chop is to carve it into a mars staedtler eraser, you can cut these to whatever size you need and lino cutting tools etc will work on them. You can also transfer the design by drawing it in pencil on tracing or other paper,
then rubbing the paper onto the eraser. the pencil will transfer.
happy carving

See what you get for ever meeting me? LOL I just do
not know how to post to the Baren without first
getting the email and replying to it. There has to be
a way or there would be no digest. However my favor is
- would you please post this for me?
I had a chop made in San Francisco years ago, but
suspect nothing has changed. Here's the info:
The store is called the New Unique Company at 838
Grant Ave. Mezzanine floor - winding staircase with
dragon up stairs. The hours mean nothing.
I looked through a catalog of sir names and picked
one. They mailed the finished chop. I was then, and
still remain totally satisfied.
Thanks Sharri for doing this.

Maria. For the Exchange #37, I would like to suggest the theme of Human Rights or Peace.
Thank you, Guadalupe

Does Mr. Cui ever teach Chinese-style woodblock printmaking?
Also, I have discovered that if I spray the solar plate with
a light coating of spray varnish,
the water-based ink still rolls on very well, but the plate does not dissolve.

Hello Friends.
I'd like to second the idea of using Mr. Cui at the San Francisco Asian
Museum. He is so considerate.
You choose the carved stone (mine has a temple dog on top), then he discusses
how your chop mark might be made. It turned into a real adventure for me.
Then you pay for the stone (some are so inexpensive!) and the carving and a sniff
for postage. Soon afterwards it was delivered to my studio in a beautiful,
protective box. I am so pleased with the entire process and result that I'm
going to describe it to you. I bet you can get them over the Net from the Museum
as well.
For example, my art name is "Benny Alba", a nickname and the second due to
beauty of the Spanish language. (My real name is impossible to pronounce.) After
a thoughtful discussion with Mr Cui., my friend Di Anne Love and I decided to
go with the idea that Benny is bene/good in Spanish. Alba, which I also
chose, because it means dawn and I love those colors and the light of dawn, means
"risen" as well. I had no idea when I picked it out over 20 years ago.
So I have something resembling "goodness ascending".
One can only hope to live up to that name.
It's an adventure! Enjoy the ride.
