We set off tomorrow evening for a bit of a pre-baby adventure. Last year I
applied for and received a travel grant to visit medical museums in Europe
(especially those with interesting pathology collections). The idea being to
sketch and photograph interesting specimens on site for a new body of work
related to my "Prodigies" series (
http://www.missioncreep.com/mundie/).
My application was approved shortly after we discovered that Kate was
pregnant and due to have a wee nipper in mid April. Consequently, we've had
to move the trip forward before the point where Kate would be unable to fly.
We'll start with four days in London so that I can spend time at the
Hunterian Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons. We'll then spend a week
in a Right Bank flat in Paris where I have appointments at the Musee
Dupuytren, the Musee d'Histoire de la Medicine, and others among the usual
enchantments of that city. We wrap up the tour with a week in Amsterdam
(Museum Vrolik) and side trips to Leiden (Museum Boerhaave, Naturalis
Museum), Utrecht (Museum Bleulandinum), and Groningen (Universiteit
Groningen), before jetting home on St. Valentine's Day.
I hope to come home laden with photographs and drawings to turn into
woodcuts, etchings and engravings.
Jim
