Well after much debate and inner struggle, I have decided I must part with
my little Thomas Press. I actually bought it in 2000, I think, from the
previous press builder, Dan Patrick.
First a picture of the lovely thing:
http://www.1000woodcuts.com/projects/puzzle/printing/index.htm
That is "in action" with fellow printmaker Barbara Mason in the process of
printing the first puzzle project.

Here is the website: http://www.thomaspresses.com
Mine is the 24x36 model but includes the stand (welded). It has gauges
installed and everything works fine. Will print a full sheet of 22x30" paper
and the wheel is small but easy to turn. Barbara can attest about its ease
of use since I made her slave over the first puzzle project for hours and
hours...

The press has served me well and I continue to use it for smaller prints.
Upon purchasing (and using! wow) a larger Whelan I tried and tried to make
room in the studio for both and it just ain't happenin'
I'm not one to accumulate stuff and would rather see the little
Patrick-press get used than sit and collect dust; in Vegas, at least it
won't rust. I was going to make it into a litho press for my lonely litho
stone and might still do that if I don't get any reasonable offers.

If interested please contact me off list about price and pick up details.
Two people can easily move it and probably doesn't weigh more than 200-250
lbs. I have no set price in mind. I feel like I'm giving away a pet more
than a press, so the "good home" is my main criteria.

Maria maria@mariarango.com for inquiries!

Maria,
I'm very interested in your press. I've been keeping an eye out for a
small press, and have just the spot for it in my studio. I live in
the SF Bay Area, and can come and pick it up. Does it come off of the
stand for travel? What sort of price were you thinking of?

Hi all -

I hope some printers will have some advice on my print for the Fairy Tale
Exchange.

I have a carved unmounted linoleum block and will print it in black with
oil-based inks. My question is about soaking the paper. I have a heavy
weight Stonehenge and usually I'd soak it in a water bath, but have read on
the forum about spraying with water on every other page and sealing the
paper in a plastic bag overnight. It would be a lot simpler, but want to
make sure I'm doing it right before I try.

Thanks!

Jenn

The 'spray every other sheet' thing is mainly intended for moku-hanga
printers (Japanese technique using water-borne pigments applied by brush)
and is a general guideline for preparing Japanese-type papers.

Works with _every_ paper I've tried...and I've tried tons of them. I always
use the spray and stack method for dampening any paper, not quite so messy.
Just be sure you let enough time go by so that the moisture has time to
"crawl" through the stack.

Having said that, in my experience Stonehenge usually needs no dampening at
all. One of the reasons I love this paper is that it is ready to print dry
and seems to "love" the oil ink. It is very lightly sized, as I recall,
which makes it very absorbent.
I would recommend printing dry and see how that goes.

Good luck,
Maria
