In Susanna Clarke's "Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrell: a Novel", there's a
barren wood of thorn trees in the netherworld. Corpses hang from every
tree, some might have died yesterday while others are age-old skeletons.
"At the entrance to the wood stands a statue of a woman with her hands
outstretched. In one hand she holds a stone eye and in the other a stone
heart." A tower of rough-hewn stones is guarded by a young man, pale and
sickly and with dead eyes. He is the Champion of the Castle of the Plucked
Eye and Heart, sworn to protect the Lady by killing and hanging the corpse
of any challenger from a tree. When the Champion is killed, the challenger
becomes the new Champion, compelled to stand and protect. And so on.
I'm very grateful for the opportunity to help out with the Baren exchanges
-- I've TOTALLY enjoyed managing the 27 exchanges from #12 through #35
(including three salon de refuse, but not including #36 just getting
underway), totally enjoyed working with each wonderful coordinator, totally
enjoyed the web-work, the printmakers, the prints, the whole ball of wax.
But it's WAY passed time for me to SHARE THE LOVE! Problem with 'volunteer'
positions is that it's hard to get OUT of them unless and until a suitable
replacement's willing to step up and take over - I was willing (eager,
really) to take over from Bea Gold six years ago - and today Maria Arango is
willing to take over from me!
SO. I have the ENORMOUS pleasure to announce my 'retirement' (woo-hoo!) and
to introduce (not that she needs an introduction) our NEW BAREN EXCHANGE
MANAGER: Maria Arango!!! (trumpets followed by several harp arpeggios -
what an ANGEL)!
THANK YOU, MARIA!!!! I'm free - FREE - FREEEEEEEEE
mwaaa-ha-ha-ha-HAAAaaa!!!! (but will continue to serve Baren as
co-webmaster and member of Council and active in the Forum, of course.
With any luck at all, Maria will find some time this year to streamline the
exchange sign-up and gallery areas - she's a heck of a lot better organized
and more energetic than I can ever hope to be, so this is going to be a HUGE
STEP UP for us!!! Perhaps you can tell - I couldn't be happier!
The exchange manager is retired! Long live the exchange manager! You can
always contact the Baren Exchange manager by emailing
exchanges@barenforum.org or exchange_manager@barenforum.org or via the Baren
