Charles,
What a mine of information condensed into your site plus the galleries of your other prints.
I've spent years looking at bas relief animals in stone and transposing them to wood, but never thought of relief /intaglio prints using stoneblocks as you have done.
Attached is my latest print from a cast off kitchen cupboard and idea from the forum of using a 'dremmel drill'. This has produced even more vigorous, misprinted lines than usual!

I would like also to thank the committee of volunteers who work on behalf of Baren, the exchange co-coordinators and members who take on board all printmaking queries from beginners to the professional.
All the best for another successful New Year.

Jean,
You need to be careful when washing the plate with
fine relief lines, don't scrub it, just blot with soft
paper towels (viva is the best)
the problem with fine lines in relief is they are
pretty straight edged so susceptible to just keening
over under pressure and breaking away from the backing
as there is little to hold them and the material is
softer than wood or lino. Hairlines just won't work in
relief in my experience.
I will send you my notes
Best to all

Thanks for the kind words, Harry.

That is a GREAT print!!! What an image! It reminds me of tapeworms ... I suppose because of the segmentation and the shape of the heads.

The stone prints are a lot of fun, but they can be a pain to print. It all depends on how flat the stone is to start with. When I first began, I thought I would first smooth and polish the stone. But that proved to be a BIG job. And part way through, I realized that I could just use plexiglass if all I wanted was a smooth surface!!! But I really liked the natural texture in the stones I was working with, and I decided to see how they would print naturally. Well, I really liked the look, for some reason. So at last, I found a place where sloth has value!! Don't polish those stones!! For my stone prints, I am doing "one liners" ... basically designs which are made as much as possible with just one line. Of course I cannot adhere to that completely, but I try to do the bulk of the figure with just one line.

So, Harry ... try some stone prints. They are lots of fun.

Cheers ..... Charles

Barbara et al, I have printed intaglio using my ball bearing baren, which
worked out ok using very thin paper. You have to press VERY hard though, so it
sure is better if you have a press!

Patti,
RE: Solarplate as relief image

Barbara neglected to mention that the image should be on a
transparency. I have scanned from the computer and printed onto in
jet transparencies and that works great - easy to reverse the image
as she mentioned you must do for relief. Or, just painting with oil
base ink onto acetate also works, but more difficult to transpose
those darks to lights, unless your brain works a whole lot better
than mine does, which is very probable!

Cheers ~
