hey Brad, love the steamroller print and relate to the message of it as
well, as I grew up in San Francisco.

and Annette, if you are printing large areas of color, one thing that would
help you so much would be a ball bearing baren. This is like a power tool of
barens and makes it much easier to achieve those large flat areas. They are
available on the baren mall or through Mcclain's
_www.imcclains.com_ (http://www.imcclains.com)
I have two different ones from Mcclain's and though they are not cheap, they
have been worth every penny for me.

Also, the balance of water/ink/rice paste/pigment is always a tricky balance
and there may well need to be some experimentation and adjustments there as
well.

and what paper are you using? thick western papers are difficult to print
using the Japanese method, though I have had some success using Stonehenge or
Rives Heavyweight using a lot of pressure with the Baren.

Dear Annette,

I noticed that the problem was not just relegated to
the violet. In your images, the yellow seems to hold
a bit of the same issue just not as noticeable. Do
you grind your pigments in a mortar and pestle? I do
this and it seems to help. Also, Dave recommends
adding alcohol to the pigment mixture which I also
find to be a help. I store my pigments ready to go
in a jar with a layer of alcohol on top so that they
are constantly infused.
Also, did you let your paper sit long enough to soak
up the water?
I hope my ramblings help!

in yr print at first looks like snowy mountains, but I know its the
fog that comes in every a, I looked at your print- very nice. I used
to live in Noe Valley for ten years, and the view in yr picture is
not unlike what we could see every day, except we had a steeper view,
being close in. The fog in yr pic looks like cold snowy mountains at
first, but I know its the blanket of cold fog that comes blowing and
streaming over twin peaks every summer afternoon, making you wish you
had brought a sweater when you left the house on a balmy morning.
Brought back memories. Thanks!

Annette, what kind of brush are you using to apply the pigment/
paste/water combination? It looks as though the pigment
mixture has not been sufficiently mixed together on the block.

I'm not sure what mineral violet water color consists of - but for
me, I can't seem to get the balance right with water colors.
Something about some ingredients in watercolor pigments,
I think.

I use one of the more modestly priced barens ($30 to $40)
and print on many different kinds of papers including
stonehenge & lenux.

Good luck - and let us know what your conclusions are!

Subject: [Baren 34260] Gettin an even print
Send Message: To this poster

The question is how to get a more even print. I have struggled with this
and only sometimes succeed in getting a good flat, but then wonder why I am
doing it since I like grainy better anyway. I guess the answer to that is
that one should be able to control the effects so you can get the effect you
want when you want it.

When I print a flat, I always have to print the block twice. I push my
baren in circles and then I have to reverse the circles and go in the other
direction. I use a cheap baren with plastic bumps. Those are my best
suggestions.
