Last night I was able to pull a few trial proofs of one of my engraving
blocks, with my 'new to me' Farley flatbed proofing press. It was great
fun and 2 1/2 hours just flew by! I wasn't trying anything fancy, just
getting to know how it worked and learning about the height adjustment
on the cylinder and how it worked with varying amounts and types of
packing. Also tested different types of paper. Why is it that Newsprint
always gives the best impressions? Argh! Anyway, I also had success
with a Japanese paper, Sunome Senaka and have some sheets of Zerkall to
try out next.
I'm looking forward to my next session!
Sue
newsprint
because it is smooth, soft, no sizing
some of the japanese papers print the same way as news print. but with a
press you have a lot more choice with paper than hand printing.
I'm finding that out. I'm looking forward to trying the Zerkall too.
Sue
Hey Sue,
Newsprint's made to grab ink, that's why it prints so well. We have
good results on our letterpress at the shop with Arches textwove and
Rives BFK heavyweight. We find that the fuzzier side of Kitikata
works well too, it will bleed through so a backer sheet is a good idea.
Have fun - Ian Ox
For dry printing i like rives light weight damp esp with large black
areas rives or arches or for large numbers of colors.
I gave my firt attempt with Caligo brand water clean up ink last night, this is the ink that is oil based, but cleans with soap and water. (by the way, i typically print oil based inks applied with a roller/brayer and print on a press with dry paper)
I found the ink did basically what it said. Out of the tube the ink is a little looser than i usually print (and i was unable to modify). but it rolled out fine, it didn't dry on the slab as some water clean-up inks do. During printing there was very little odor, and at clean up time i poured a little dish soap on the slab and on my brayer and it cleaned up fine.
I wasn't crazy about the printing however, i found that the ink wanted to stay light, when i built enough ink to get a rich black, the fine lines on the block began to fill in and i started to get an "orange peel" texture on the prints. i want to try one more time with damp paper to see if i get better results.
while this ink didn't make me want to switch, it is definitely the best water clean-up ink i've tried.

Thank you Brad. Your pig arrived in Perth Australia this week.... very
tired and hungry, and too skinny to eat yet!
Thank you and thank you too to all the other pigs and piglets that have
made their way over thousands of miles! I enjoy getting each of them
and my postman always had the prints on the top of my pile!
Eight weeks before the finish of my Master of Arts/ Art Therapy and
then hopefully back in the land of the printers and paid workers!
This month is our famous Wildflower month in Western Australia and
there is a programme of Cultural activities at Kings Park which is our
major park overlooking the city.... very beautiful too.... Gum trees,
fountains, wild flowers that include Kangaroo paws, cats paws, growing
paper flowers and Drumsticks! The Japanese pavillion has their
Japanese Garden and is having workshops on Ikebana, Calligraphy, Tea
Ceremonies and Woodblock Workshops (for 2 hours!) I don't know who is
taking it, but will book in ..... I might learn something new. Will
give you an update after next weekend.
