Mark,

There is also Graham Scholes DVD/ Video available as well for those who
want a visual perspective and who may have trouble reading
instructions. These are available through Graham on his website

I have just written a specific "Step by Step" instruction for Hanga
woodblock printing a three colour print for a postcard size...... I
have a workshop coming up in Donnybrook, three hours south of Perth,
Western Australia in September and two printmakers who also did a
woodblock workshop with Hiroshi Tomihari (and me) several years ago are
going to teach the illustration, transfer and carving section and I am
travelling down there to teach the hanga printing section because both
other girls are oily printers, so I have had to write my instructions
out word for word..... as I do it with the traditional
registration...... and boy! ....... did I stress the kento registration
angle!!!.......... I also gave a two hour pre workshop instruction to
the lady who came to collect all my cut woodblocks ( generous but not
over generous!) for them to use, and a couple of my printed woodblock
sets to have them there for comparison re kento marks.

I am sorry my instructions cannot be emailed to you because I did some
of them in my usual "cut and Paste" method before having them
professionally copied.

I will tell you if my instructions "worked", how many took notice or
could fathom out my instructions, and disasters if any.............

to be continued..................

I do think that Annette's suggestion of Rebecca's book is easy and good
practical advice to follow........

>> Rebecca Salter¹s Japanese woodblock printing / Honolulu :
>> University of
>> Hawai'i Press, 2002 is a great book. Very straightforward and not too
>> expensive ($15.00 on Amazon).

The next best thing is attending a workshop and several Baren members
can help you out there where ever you live...... now if you would like
to come to Australia, I would love to take you through some practical
advice.........

Enjoy,
Jan

Evolving Techniques in Japanese Woodblock Prints, by Gaston Petit and
Amadio Arboleda

It was published in 1977 ... check with on-line used book dealers ...
you may get lucky!!!"

I just found a copy of this book online for $50, which I was willing
to pay for such great information. I just started reading it, but am
delighted to see the spirit of experimentation and innovation that
these Japanese artists display. The descriptions of their working
methods are very detailed and clearly aimed at printmakers. A great
book if you can find a copy.

Hey, Annie,

Only $50 ... That's great!!! Wish I had been so lucky when I was
looking. Worth every penny. I found the book to be very stimulating
... and as you said, it seems clearly pointed at printmakers. Lots of
good stuff there.

Cheers ...... Charles

Thanks to all who sent in info.about books- a lifetime of interesting reading.
Cheers Charles, Annie, and others --I borrowed the Gaston Petit book
Evolving Techniques..... from my public library in 1999 The Dewey decimal system
number is 769.9 P, just in case anyone is using that system anymore. Excellent book
.It's time for me to borrow it again This time I'll appreciate more, it
being 8 years later. Annie, I notice the 1930 book you mentioned by Salaman can also be
borrowed from the library.
With the computer systems libraries now use they can locate any available
book, even linking into college collections..

Let me second that on Graham's DVD. That was invaluable at getting me started on woodcuts and hanga.

Hello fellow printmakers!

Two updates in one, how about that for efficiency.

The happy stone pile is coming along nicely with only ONLY 11 holes left.
Mind you that without those rocks, I'm afraid the whole thing will tumble so
the cairn really needs to be complete.
I have now bought all the paper needed and am just waiting on the
stragglers. Thank you all for participating, for sending your blocks, for
sending those incredible little surprises and for contributing to the
project. The prints promise to be awesome!
As I dont' have all the blocks yet, I can't settle on a printing schedule
but will soon enough.
If you have not yet done so, contact me to let me know when your block might
be on the way and submit your details here:
CAIRN INFORMATION PAGE
http://1000woodcuts.com/projects/cairn/index.html

The Iraq exchange, by coincidence, also has 11 participants missing in
action. Please get the prints to me as soon as you can so I can get on with
the collating. If you have not yet sent a colophon or some information about
your print, please do that as well whenever you get the prints in.
The prints that are in are totally awesome!

I have a little trip coming up next week, two festivals back to back which
will take me away for about two weeks. Wouldnt' it be incredible if all the
stragglers were here by the time I got back? It would be wonderful!

Do what you can, let's get these two wrapped up, say by the end of August?
Cheers to all and happy carving, printing...mailing...

Maria
