Marissa, Matt Brown here in New Hampshire gives a couple of moku hanga
workshops each year. I haven't taken one, but others I know who have

Ok Here we go. I have done something like this and it worked great.

I learned this from an old college professor.
1) I take an image that i created from my sketch book and photo copy it or scan and print it from my computer. (both have worked)
2) Secret ingredient - Modge Podge (glossy). It is the best stuff I have found. Believe it or not, better than golden acrylic medium and liquitex.
3) Paint one layer over the whole paper nice and even. Let dry at least 1 hour
4) Paint one layer over the whole paper nice and even. Let dry at least 1 hour
5) Paint one layer over the whole paper nice and even. Let dry at least 1 hour
6) Paint one layer over the whole paper nice and even. Let dry at least 1 hour
7) Paint one layer over the whole paper nice and even. Let dry at least 1 hour
8) Paint one layer over the whole paper nice and even. Let dry at least 1 hour
9) Paint one layer over the whole paper nice and even. Let dry at least 1 hour
10) Paint one layer over the whole paper nice and even. Let dry at least 1 hour
you get the picture
you need at least 7 or 8 good dried layers for it to work easily. to thin and you will stretch the image or tear it.
11) I let the paper then dry over night then in slightly warm to cool water you run the paper under water.
You will be able to start "rolling" off the paper. Do this as gently as possible. With care and practice you will have a nice thick clear film with your image in it like a Milar transfer but way better.
12) let it dry.
13) take the same Modge Podge and paint a thin layer on the wood block. Stick the clear transfer to it and let dry.
14) carve away
15)wash the block under warm water when done and the remaining transfer will come off. You will then print just the carved block.

The Modge Podge is an acrylic/waterbased glue. It is cheap and really works great. I have done this a number of time. The more layers of modge podge the better.
I usually carve right through my paper, but when I have a block with extremely fine details, I use this method

Marilynn, congratulations on the arrival of the new grandson!

Marissa, I tried hanga many years ago in a class in Portland and the
instructor had us use gouache. I was very unhappy with the prints and
the process was a bust, as far as I was concerned. It was hotter than
hades here that week and the workshop was in a small enclosed room with
no air movement. Between thinking I was about to have a near death
experience I would be fearing that I had already died and this was
hell. Obviously it was neither because several years later I went to
the Baren summit in Kansas City and tried the method again with the
proper transparent pigments and was hooked. I still don't use the
medium exclusively, but it has definitely become a part of my
repertoire, and is a great deal of fun. I tried using my old oil based
plates and they didn't work too well, for one reason – they are carved
a little differently because you are thinking color rather than black
and white and because the kento (registration marks) are carved as part
of the block, usually. Anyway, I am with Marilynn on this, and also no
expert, but I would recommend splurging on a couple of tubes of
inexpensive student grade watercolor to experiment with. You can
always use them later for something, if only to color Western woodblock
prints. One last thing: methyl cellulose is cheap, easy, lasts a long
time, does not go bad if you keep it refrigerated between uses and,
IMHO, cannot be beat! I mix a quart every year or so.

I hear you (Marissa and Mike) talking about ME!

Thank you Mike, for the recommendation! I do have great classes, though I
still don't seem to be able to tie a baren properly! I gave a nice class a
few years ago at Mixit in Boston. The studio is now focusing more on studio
time for members than on offering classes, though. I do have a lot of
teaching this summer, in various parts of the country,

Right now I am preparing for an exhibition at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden
coinciding with the Cherry Blossom Festival. I understand that in Japan this
is a drinking festival, but in Brooklyn no alcohol is permitted! It is a
celebration of Japanese culture, and I will have an exhibition in the
Steinhardt Conservatory Gallery (along with paper cut artist Kako Ueda) from
April 7 to May 6 with the reception on April 14 at 1:00 pm. The Sakura
Matsuri will be the weekend of April 28 and 29. (If you arrive before noon
entrance is free, except during Sakura.)

I am sorry it conflicts with Bea Gold's Big Retrospective! I will think of
her on the opposite coast with her opening on the same day!

My month will be here tomorrow, after an extended winter!

Hi there
I am a new member - just signed up.
I'm an English printmaker living in Southampton UK - so I hope you'll
let me in.
I work mainly in wood and lino - I do a lot of colour reduction
prints and I have just taught myself to do multiple block prints -
finally solved previous registration problems. I have had a go at
Japanese style woodblock printing at a class with Rebecca Salter. I
liked the registration trick (the kento marks) but found the cutting
style a bit arduous. I am a big cheat because I use stuff called
Liteply from the hobby shop. It's easy to cut and so cheap.
My recent prints are bright and colourful include text and (I hope)
are a bit funny.
I co-run a print workshop in Southampton called Red Hot Press. we
have been open almost 3 years, www.redhotpress.org.uk - have a look
at my gallery although it needs updating. I don't yet have my own
website.
I'm particularly into print exchanges and I hope I'll be able to take
part in a Baren one now I have joined. I did the print zero one last
year and it was fab.

I drive a 1968 Morris Minor 1000 Traveller. Irrelevant but possibly
an insight into 'me n ma thang'....?

What a delight to have another lino/woodcut artist among us. It looks like your workshop is a great place to work. Regarding exchanges, tomorrow (April 1) is the sign-up for the next Baren print exchange. Be sure to sign up early because the places go fast. I've found the exchanges are wonderfully inspiring, seeing the quality of everyone's work.
