Ah-HA! Eureka! You put a nice 'oil finish' in the block, so it is now
impervious to water! I doubt that sanding and scrubbing will fix it,
though. Oil is very penetrating and linseed oil polymerizes (that's why oil
paintings have such permanence!

I suggest that you never worry about wood being 'too dry' and never oil a
block intended for hanga printing unless you intend to reduce the absorbency
of the wood... Your block was relatively simple -- recarve it, or use it
for oil-based printing.

Congratulations on having uncovered the source of the problem!

host a reception for UK Professor Ross Zirkle

Bea, what an incredible story, OUCH!

one more tip to prevent bloody fingers: I sometimes wear a gardening glove on my left hand (I carve with my right), so if the tool does slip, it only gets the glove, not my finger.
